XFX HD 4830

I'm going to jot down my initial thoughts and bit about its overclocking ability.

Setup 1

  • Athlon X2 5050e 2.6GHz 1MB L2
  • 2x1GB Super Talent DDR2 800
  • Asus M3A78-EM 780G/SB700
  • XFX HD 4830 512MB
  • Vista 32-bit

Setup 2

  • Athlon X2 7750 BE @ 3.0GHz
  • 2x1GB OCZ DDR2 1066
  • Asus M3A78-EM 780G/SB700
  • XFX HD 4830 512MB
  • Vista 32-bit

Setup 3
  • Athlon X2 7750 BE @ 3.3GHz
  • 2x1GB OCZ 1066 DDR2
  • DFI LP Jr 790GX-M2RS
  • XFX HD 4830 512MB
  • Windows 7 Beta 32-bit

Aesthetics

The card looks great! Typical XFX quality all around. It has a flat black finish, a black PCB and a black PCI bracket. Did I mention that its black? :)

Cooling

First off, with the stock fan profile the 4830 idles around 38 degrees and loads in the low 50s! That is a huge difference than what I used to see with my reference 4850 and 4870. Fan noise is pretty quiet as well but picks up a little as the card is loaded (obviously).

Overclocking

The factory clocks are set at 575/900. So far I have it 3DMark06 stable at 802/1074. Any memory frequency above 1078MHz causes instant artifacting on the desktop. In addition, overclocking the core and memory haven't raised the load temps above a couple of degrees.

Peformance between a 4830 and a 4850 is nearly identical. The 4830 will just run a lot cooler.

I will definitely go Crossfire when I get my X58 board.

2 x 4830s = $250!

Thats not the only difference...

The 4850 has 800 unified shaders, the 4830 has 640 unified shaders :)

Other than that they are the same :)

hmmm, i'm tempted :p
reckno you can crossfire 4850 and 4830 then? it should give the same performance as 4850 crossfire if what you said is true.

4870 + 4850 crossfire means the 4870 runs at the speed of the 4850 yeah...so if a 4830 is pretty much = to 4850, it should be nothing to worry about!

What about tri-fire with the new hydra chip (fingers crossed its coming soon). That will outperform the current HD4870X2 no doubt :)

Exactly!

I had a 4870/4850 setup for awhile. That particular 4850 was a terrible overclocker which restricted my 4870 to 700MHz.

i can't get my model 4850 anymore the shops here in Melbourne don't stock them anymore. and they' don't come with Crosfire connecter/cable so that's annoying.

i might pick up a 4830 then, if you can Xfire with them:thup:

Ive been hearing about the 4850's as bad overclockers but i have to say mine is amazing!

I managed to hit 800 on the core and 1200 on the memory (2400 effective) which was stable ingame for around a while but then would freeze (not due to heat, temps are amazing), with slightly more voltage it would be stable...

I leave it to run at 730/1100(2200 effective) for everyday use/gaming, i may vMod one day to reach 800+ core speeds and higher memory speeds...

Maybe im just lucky and had a good OC'er?

Just to clarify, did you mean 4830s or 4850s?

I meant the 4850's :)

Btw i see you have got a great overclock on that 4830, i can reach 800+ core speeds with some extra voltage, did you manage to hit that stable with stock voltage?

I can hit 800 core but its only stable for around half hour of gaming then it freezes, with extra voltage i could make it stable...

I may get one of these 4830's :p

I checked in ORB the results are very close to the 4850, if it stays the same in RL this a real killer buy.

Runs off to check 4830 prices.

Congrats man that was well done, 3rd place in ORB...
