About a week ago I started having a loud squeal come from what seems to be my motherboard. This squeal starts up usually when I start to play FEAR, I presume because it puts a load on my computer. When I minimize FEAR, the squealing stops. It's also happened in GTA:SA during certain moments. Only during these load times does it squeal. However, I've been using this computer for well over a year and haven't had this problem. It started up after I took my computer and put it in my vehicle, went home for the weekend (been in my dorm for a month+). 'twas in my vehicle on the way back of course, and when I hook it back up once I get to my dorm and try to play FEAR later, it starts that high pitch squealing.

I've been looking at my temperatures. Nothing out of the norm, it seems, honestly. My video card temperature is still sorta high, like usual. It idles in the mid 50s and goes into the mid to upper 60s while playing the game. I believe my CPU is idling with a fine temperature... I don't think anything is out of the norm. Used Speedfan to check the temperatures and nothing was higher than normal.

Any ideas as to what it could be? What i could do? I could recheck temperatures and report them back here if necessary. It does seem to be load related. Only happens when gaming. I just really want to fix this because it's not normal and it's really annoying.

Could it be that when the GPU fan accelerates it could be hitting something? or is it dusty?

why not remove everything and try to place them back together properly, tightly, snuggly

if it happened after transferring in the car, doesnt that point to a loose component?

Some people have had problems with their gpu emitting a sound similar to what you have discribed. Try another video card if you have one laying around, if not run 3dmark06 and see if it gets even worse.

My video card would squeal when running intensive graphics ( games, 3dmarks, etc), but doing normal things like surfing the net it was quiet as a church mouse. Cleaned the fans out just to be sure it wasn't the fans making the noise.

With help from another member (Pinky) we narrowed the squeal down to a capacitor on the card. Rma'ed the card and the replacement works like a charm without squealing.

You'll have to listen to where exactly the squeal is comming from and when it occurs. Could be one of the capacitors on the board.

Squealing can also come from the PSU, hard drives, the power components on the motherboard, etc. You need to open up the case when this is happening and try to locate the source of the sound. If you get yourself a length of rubber tubing an place one end in your ear and move the other end around inside the case, it will help you to localize the sound. Whatever the source is will dictate the corrective action. Try to localize it and report back.

Yep it can definitely be the PSU... I just discovered this yesterday and it was my PSU making the noise when doing anything visually intensive (would include pulling the vertical scroll bar in a forum thread like this, in addition to the obvious 3Dmark and such).
