LandShark's Folding Aquarium!!

I'm at the finishing stage of my own folding cabinet! (I called it my "Folding Aquarium" since it will be filled up with "Sharks" that eat up WUs like crazy !)

I was planning to build my own using smiliar design/material like Silver did. I've even draw up a few pictures/drafts for the design. however, one day when I was at Ikea, I saw this cabinet that's almost exactly to what I have in mind for a folding cabinet!! even my girl friend said look, that looks almost exactly to what you have on the paper!! so, for $79, it's a lot better/easier/might even be cheaper than I could build!!

here's some preview pics.....

with this cabinet, pretty much all I need to do is just cut out some 120mm hole for the intake and exhaust fans for each layer.

and since it will most likely hosting some Presler shark, I decided to not just putting a exhaust fan (which should be enough in most case!), but also a intake fan which will blow directly onto the heatsink to add cooling.

my fan choose is Antec's TriCool fan which I really love from the experience of my P180 case. I can have it as quiet as possible (in winter) or move a lot of air (in summer) via the built in switch that I route to the back of the cabinet for ease of change of the fan speed.

yeah, I missed counted and still missing 3 more fans and some fan grills.

from my previous seti cabinet experience, a dust sheld is A MUST for the intake side (at least) or everything WILL BE covered from dust in just a few weeks!!

and what I really like about this dust filter/sheld is I can take the dust filter off without taking the mounting bracket off!! make cleaning the filter a lot easier than deassemble the thing!!

with the window door mounted just for the photo. it's a dark tinted temper glass door!! I like it a lot especially I'm planning to do a little "lighting" inside and it will be subtle enough with the dark tinted glass yet enough to "show off" the sharks inside!!

will post update when it's up and running!!

Very nice looking aquarium setup ... i bet you are getting anxious to populate it!

Not sure if you have fully decided on what to put in it yet but for pure folding DC rigs I am leaning back to 800's and p5ld2's with 420 W ocz psu's as my current best good bang for the buck for DC.

I still have more tests to do with the 920 (like running it on a 420 powerstream instead of a 520 on the p5wd2, and seeing if i can up production with some mushkin 6400 I have vs the current corsair 5400c4), but I hate to pay full retail for cpu's!! Although it has been a bit of fun to be playing with new stuff early.

My only other thought on the p5ld2 vs p5wd2 is that the p5dw2 appears to be more future proof, and definitely OC's better on the newest cpus. I don't think i will play with the new 975 mobo's ... at least not for pure folding rigs ... sounds like they will be quite expensive at least initially, for pure folders.

yes, I hear you Pete!

975x board will only be use to replace on the rigs that I actually "use", not gonna be a pure folder board, as you said, too $$$! however, I do more lean onto the 955x instead of the 945x board even tho they cost more! 'cos from what I think/feel, the 955x should has a better chance to support conroe (even tho it's slim) than the 945x especially after seeing your P5LD2 result with Presler.

Yes ... I agree with the investment protection aspect, especialy after my experience with presler.

My 'farm management upgrade' path might be a bit different than yours needs to be ... if i start upgrading the farm after conroe is here, i will likely start replacing my low end rigs. And depending on WU workload then, I could optionally replace them with AMD's or Conroes as well.
I doubt that i will add any/many more rigs to the home farm.

I mean 6 ea x 500W = 3000Wats which is close to 25 amps.

hmm.... I'm not an electrian guy.... so... I guess it's gonna be tough on the circuit huh??... how do I find out what each breaker's rating is on the breaker box??

500W PSU has an inrush current of about 80 amps for a fraction of a second * 6 units will be 480 Amps (give or take). If all 6 are plugged into the same power strip and the PS is turned on then a breaker will more than likely trip. Assume these 6 units are on the same circuit. With 1 unit, AC power will see a slight topping of the waveform's peaks and valleys, no big deal. 2 units PSUs plugged in simaltainuosly will make a lamp flicker. 3 will trip a UPS making it go to battery for a second unless it has active line conditioning. For four or more you will more than likely trip the breaker. It all depends on the distance from the breaker box, wire rating and circuit installation technique. I would count 400 and 500 watt PSUs like appliances with no more than 3 to 4 per circuit.

Inrush current is the capacity of the PSU. This is the reserve power that makes it possible for those P4s to draw enormous amounts of power from the PSU where the PSU delivers. When power is pluged in to the PSU, you will notice a nice little POP. This is power rushing in to load the caps and coils. Once charged then it draw will be steady aroung 200 watts give or take 20 watts. You are looking at about 1200-1400 watts continuos which is close the limit for most household circuits under continuos duty. If possible try to split then into two sets plugged into 2 different wall outlets. The other thing to consider is the other sockets on that circuit. You don't want a vacume, portable heater, hair dryer or laser printer getting plugged into this circuit. Don't let this freak you, it just takes some checking to find what circuits you have by locating the breaker for them and the other outlets connected to the chain.

With many rigs around it use very useful to hap a map of your circuits .... i had to do this when i had to upgrade a bunch of outlets from ungrounded (2 prong) to grounded (3 prong ... fortunantely ithe house is wired with grounded copper cable!)

I mapped out every light switch, and power outlet for each circuit in the house. Makes it much easier to aviod popping circuits, and how to balance loads as you add more rigs (and other applicances).

A cheap cuircuit polarity tester is useful for this to verfiy there are no crosswired or interconnected circuits .... I found 2 in my house! ... one while i was working on what i thought was a circuit i had turned off!! and the other when trying to add a gfci outlet that ground or neutral was interconnected on 2 cuircuits with a bunch of 2 and 3 way switches in them.
