Hello All,

As many of you have pointed out from numerious e-mails, the Fash Drive results are.... for lack of a better word, inaccurate.

My testing was done on my system, as listed:

AMD XP2400 11x200
1 gig Corsair 3200XL TCCD @ 2-2-2-11
H2O'd cpu & NB
Windows XP Pro w/SP1

NOTE here: SP1 does not have USB 2.0 support, SP2 does.

I will install SP2 & resubmit test results to JoeC for an update.

-Personally I have not wanted to install SP2, as I did not want to become ANY part of the .NETwork in any shape or form.

I am sure it is a worthy update. But has the lack of my appreciation.

I will install the SP2 for testing purposes & resubmit the data to Joe tomorrow.

Thank you for the e-mails BTW.

:attn:

I will check into it & post back & update the results.

I already have SP 1 installed tho.

OK, fully updated to SP2.

I reran all the tests. At 1st I came out with the same results.

I then went into my BIOS and dug deeper looking for various
controlers for data transfer.

I did have the "USB version 1.1+and 2.0 - enabled"
but
did not have USB compatability turned to "enable" also.

(it now is enabled)

I went into the Integrated Peripherals & found that the On Chip IDE Devices were disabled.
(now enabled) Master PIO & Master Drive Ultra DMA on Auto

I also went into the IDE2 and found the same thing.

I also checked the PnP/PCI Configurations and saw that there is
an IRQ assigned for USB. (a good thing)

OK, system fully updated save BIOS & reboot.

Defrag system/ Reboot.

Reran ALL tests, guess what?

For the Flash Drive, it made absolutely NO DIFFERENCE.

For my Maxtor 40 gig drive, it made a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

I will pass this information along to Joe with the screenies
& ask him to add a page to the article.

Thanks again to EVERYONE for thier input here.

After recieving several more e-mails & I looked into it some more.

I agree, 1.1 is not good for a flash drive.

1) I uninstalled the USB driver & rebooted.
-system recognized it & installed the "newer" (?) drivers.

2) reran the test - same thing.

3) clicked on little icon in tray,

-using in "slower" USB port :(
*needs moved to faster (2.0) port.

Now this is strange here, I only have 2 USB ports on the back of my mobo.

Went into Device Manager & through a "few" properties windows I was
able to select "Optimal performance" for the Flash Drive.

Reran tests (long & short)

Short came out to 16.3 MB/s
Long came out to 52.5 Average Read.

Yes, I guess I missed this.

But now I can no longer just pull the drive (Hot Swap) out.

I need to click on the little Icon in the tray, and go through the Windows Program to remove it Safely.

Speed or Convience?

A big thanks to all who e-mailed me & helped sort this out.

i just bought a flash drive yesterday too. i initially had a bare xp installation, no service packs. as soon as i connected the flashdrive (256mb kingston), i got a message "HI-SPEED USB Device Attached To non-HI-SPEED Hub".

i benchmarked my "high speed" flashdrive, at 1MB/sec. pathetic. i read up some earticles on microsoft.com and i installed service pack 1. one reboot later, and i benchmarked my flash drive at 10.8MB/sec. no messing with bios, no messing with controller options.

what i learned:
high-speed = usb2.0
the first service pack to contain the usb2.0 controller is SP1

I now own a ScanDisk 512MB also, & it benched fine 1st time around.

No fiddling with anythng. I tried it on 2 different machines too.
w/o any sp's & w/sps.

Hey everybody.
I got a 1GB USB flash drive (it's an mp3 player actually)...
anyway the manufacturer (clubin-mp3) claims: "Interface: USB2.0(Full speed) 12."
but it only banches at 1MB/s... I tried all the things WarriorII suggested and nothing helped. So if anybody else got any ideas I'd appreciate some suggestions...
and also, does anyone knows for sure what HiSpeed and FullSpeed means?

I'm already running WinXP SP2 and it's still only 1MB/s. I have talked to WariorII before posting here and he ran out of ideas so only suggest new stuff please.
