already got Fiber here... frontiernet.... but they refuse to give us more than 1.6m down... no competition around to force them to change, either.

I'd like fibre but I can't afford it and the area I live in will probably be the very last area to ever get it. So I'm pretty much out of luck. I'll probably end up getting it right when the next big connection generation is coming out. I just upgraded to cable from dialup! Took long enough.

we've had fiber here since the early-mid 90's. our local telephone company (back then part of bellsouth...) was given a HUGE grant to rewire the entire county in Fiber. They did so.

However, we haven't had anyone willing to bring broadband until frontiernet bought out the internet company i was using. We don't have cable internet here, as we don't have cable.

Satellite DSL or Phone-DSL are the only options I have.

I think I read somewhere that the 15mb down and 2mb up is the same price as most cable at 3mb down and 384k up. If it was, I would be all over it. Provided that they made it available in my area of course.

I have Fios from Verizon and absolutley LOVE IT!
I'm getting their TV service through my fiber connection soon (hopefully before new years)
I have the 15/2 connection and coming from paying $85/mo for DSL (top end speed with phone line just to have the DSL) I must say, $45/mo is DIRT CHEAP for this high speed!
I have had 0 service interruptions except for one!
my neighbor cut my fiber line when he was installing his sprinkler system. the moron didn't read the part about the 10 foot eisement for the city utilities in front of his house, so he killed the connection to 5 homes. needless to say, we were NOT happy with him.
Anyway, I called Verison on saturday. They had a team out there monday morning and surveyed the damage... and I was up and running later that day!
Service has been great!
If you get a chance for fiber through Verizon ... DO IT!
almost EVERY other co. is just laying fiber as of the street! then copper up to your house. Verizon is Fiber all the way up to the house, then CAT5 inside.
Voice, Data, TV, etc... all through one service and connection. Can't beat it!
you can have up to 4 voice lines as well. so if you run your voice with CAT5 you can just pick your pair and make each room whichever line you choose!
...
OH!
Check out their prices on the TV service... FULL PACKAGE (what is worth $100/mo through DirecTV or Comcast) only costs $80 through verizon.

I am TOTALLY pleased!

oh god, I do NOT want to get started on verizon and their BS fiber plan. I hate Verizon with evey fiber of my being. They should have started the fiber deployment 5 years ago, not one year ago. Grrr...If I start thinking about it, it would be enough for me to go on a mad rampage, breaking, and vandelizing EVERYTHING in sight. I REALLY hate Verizon...

So if the reason you hate verizion is cause they're "late" in getting their fiber deployed to the house, which ISP do you like? Verizon is the only major ISP atm that offers fiber to the house in the US AFAIK.

as soon as i can get FIOS im jumping on it. the fibre offers so much headroom straight to their offices, where they have their own fibre and massive connections to the backbones. i will gladly contribute to verizons corporate machine, i dont care what others say, ive been given crap about it caus i work at an ISP. but flat out, my employer cant give me that kind of bandwidth, especially for that price.

infinitevalence, thats a decent price for a T1 (T1 spec is 1.544 mb sync) we're paying around 800 now for ours in the office, but we do have 512 IPs to our disposal, which seems to be the expensive part these days. we just got the cost down from 1200 to 800 tho, so its gettin better. i cant wait till (if ) verizon gets here to this town, or i move to somewhere that is covered lol. i tihnk i would opt for the 30/5 package, id spend the pennies.

No Verizon is not the only provider, there are several ILEC's in Missouri doing the same, just not on such a big scale. In fact, we are prepping to begin replacing customer drops with 5pair coper + 2 fiber. It will be some time before the fiber is lit, but it is a start.

Which ISP do I like? Hmmm...let's see, I like yahoo japan BB, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, because they aren't greedy SOB's like Verizon. But unfortunately, neither of them have any say in the US telecom market, we were unlucky enough to have a company such as Verizon control the majority of the telecom business in the US. I'm sure you know about Japan and Korea, just to name a couple of countries.

You don't get it either. I'm jumping on the fiber bandwagon too, as soon as Verizon gets their greedy asses down here, but that isn't the point at all. The reason I'm jumping on it is because it will be the fastest, most affordable thing I can get when it comes. Even with all my hatred for Verizon, I won't have a choice if I want the fastest internet connection available in the US. That is how it is almost everywhere. People don't like a company, but they are all but forced into buying the companies products, or services. Verizon knows this, and they are taking advantage of it.

And one more thing many people don't think about, the board of directors and the CEO. The people that make the choices for the products, or services that you are going to buy all make in excess of 1 million dollars a year, with the CEO probably raking in 20 million. Now with that much money, if they wanted to they could easily afford an Optical Carrier pipe strait to their rich ba*tard mansions! And because of this, they do NOT care when fiber gets deployed in the US, as long as it gets done. They don't even care if their customers are completely satisfied; they only have to keep customers just satisfied enough to where the customer will still send Verizon their money. That kind of BS just burns me up with indescribable rage, if I ran into the CEO of Verizon tomorrow I would probably end up in jail for assault, and possibly murder.

I'm sorry, but I can't stand greedy corporations, especially Verizon.

Remote desktop

personal web server, or FTP server for transferring large files

Watch Videos on your computer at a remote location

play games on your computer from a remote location (sorry this only available in Japan and Korea, you have Verizon, among other companies, to thank for that)

many other things!

I've been on fiber for a couple of years, at first it wasn't down wasn't limited but now they made improvements to the network and my bandwidth was increased from about 7mb-9mb to 15mb and limited to have that at the most and 2mb up, for the same $45 a month, and if I pay another ten a months I get 1gb mail accounts, some webspace, and twice the bandwidth.

By the way koss, the question isn't Why? it is Why not?lol

ever notice how all the files we sem to be sending are getting larger and larger? downloading videos (legit video, dont worry) that are a good few hundred megs each, and stuff like that. everything we do is getting bigger and faster. while we can do most stuff fine at 5 mbits or so, the size of what were doing is getting bigger. instead of 128kbps mp3s, were using lossless FLAC. instead of the SVCD quality were using DVD quality. hard drives are getting HUGE, giving us the space to keep huge ammounts of data, that we often want to share and acquire over the net.

why isnt 28.8 enough, why did we need to go up to 56k, and faster. we jsut want more in the same ammount of time lol.

personally, im happy on my downstream. its the up that i want, a sync connection would be grand. it sucks tryin to send hundreds of megs of video to someone. especially if you're trying to send it to 10 people. things like torrents help to distribute the load, but if i had say 5 mbits up i wouldnt have to worry about that stuff, just spend a few minues on each and its done, so maybe 30 mins to send it to everyone where... i would spend longer setting up a tracker to use with BT and then have to upload it to the people so they can upload to each other and all... and then getting them to use BT......
