how is a widescreen for gaming?

I was wondering how a widescreen sony 17.1 inch would be for gaming? It has a 22ms response time and 500:1 contrast ratio.

I'm also looking at a 19" sony with a 25ms response time and a 600:1 contrast ratio.

I have no idea about LCDs, I personally hate them, I ping 15ms to NYC servers for Counter-Strike, I wouldn't want a monitor that has a slower response time then my internet connection going from south NJ to NYC... thats kinda sad IMO. I did play TFC on my friends 60" HDTV for a couple hours, it was pretty cool. I like my 19" CRT better, but everything was so huge on the 60". This didn't answer anything you just asked, lol, whatever

I've seen that monitor and it looks nice. But I'd be very reluctant to use it for gaming.

The default resolution for the SDM-V72W is 1280x768. Unless the games you like to play offer that as an option, you'll have to resize the screen resolution to match the game. The display model I played with three weeks ago didn't like that at all. The picture quality went into the toilet at any other resolution.

The other issue is the response time. The claimed times are sometimes misleading so there is a chance you could play games on a 25ms LCD without ghosting. But I wouldn't bet $900 on it.

For that kind of jack you can buy almost any 21" CRT on the market or several very good 18" LCD's in the conventional sizing. I'd go with either of those before choosing the SDM-V72W.

I have decided to just stick with my 19" sony hmd crt. I was looking at the lcds in 18-19" but heard there would be new lcds coming out that are much better. I too tried to play with the res on the widescreen and didnt have much luck either.
Thanks for the help

I've played on one, it's actually more difficult. You have to swing your head from one side to the other to see if people are coming. When your in front of a monitor, your eyes can scan the whole thing without moving your head. It's quicker and eaiser on a monitor and most of the time, it's who sees who first.
