Thanks for the link thideras! - Interesting reading.

FudgeNuggets - you are an intelligent and insightful person. IF you have time (and I do mean IF) can you please explain why you find this device so intriguing? I'm starting to think that I must be missing something

Well, I was going to get a GPS unit for Christmas and for not really any difference in price I can get the Droid phone which has the GPS and app built in which costs and extra $70 on the iPhone. It also comes with a 16GB SD card and mediaplayer which will let me use it as an MP3 player in place of the PSP I'm currently using. So I'm already toting around 2 less devices. Another aspect I'm interested in is perhaps trying to make a couple of apps myself since it is open sourced. I'm going to start delving into the Android SDK once I get the phone.

Almost forgot about that, they keyboard is no more difficult to use than my Blackberry Curve 8330's keyboard. That is with just a few minutes of "learning" the phone too.

Heh, I got mine about noon today and have been playing with it. The only things I don't like are:

1. There are a few glitches. I had to reset my phone already because the ringer was coming out of the earpiece speaker and not out of the back speaker so it wasn't loud enough.

2. Verizon makes you buy a $40 kit to get USB drivers for it. Screw that, I'll transfer my music with Bluetooth at no charge

Everything else about it is just as good or better than the iPhone. Apple will start a campaign about how they have 100K apps vs 10K apps but have you seen how many of their "apps" are just pretty girl wallpaper or "push the fart button". Do we really need all that?

edit: Just tested the MP3 player and um yeah, I'll be selling my PSP. Droid sounds as good or better and for Vid the resolution is better.

Found another thing I didn't like. It wouldn't let me transfer the files via Bluetooth either so I had to remove the micro-SD card and copy the music directly to it. Removing the Micro-SD requires removing the battery. A minor annoyance.

Ahh Fudge - I can always count on you to give intelligent, logical explanations; spiced up with your usual good humor.

T-mobile did that dirty USB trick with me as well. Not that the stereo headphones that I had to pay $40 bucks for sound that great.

I wonder how rugged the Droids will be - I'm on my second Rizr and trying to get the mini USB port to charge the phone is a major PITA. Seriously, I have to plug and unplug it at least 5 times to get it to charge.

Thanks for posting!

Well, if it's any help the Droid uses a standard 1/8" stereo plug so no special headphones are needed. The phone is made of pretty heavy weight metal too. I had a Razr once and those things fell apart like a coke-binging hooker that just hit 30. The weakest part of the droid would have to be the same as the iPhone, the touch-screen is huge and very vulnerable to shattering into oblivion if dropped or poked the wrong way. Get the insurance on it and you won't have to worry about it though.

What are you talking about? The Droid (as well as other android phones) will just mount as a USB disk. No extra drivers needed.

Right, since the lower res screen and slower processor in the Hero are clearly superior.

It looks like a cool phone, only one problem.

Verizon

Verizon has a nasty issue of blacklisting and denying it for a while until you get clients complaining that they can't see anything and so they call Verizon and they magically de-blacklist the entire server. It's like WTF?

Ah, that's it. I didn't see the USB option on the phone. Thanks for the heads up. All I could find on Verizon website was attempts to sell me some damned data kit.

I don't play video games on my telephone.
Screen size difference is 1/4" on each side, not a big deal to me, especially when I find the Vogue's screen to be adequate for reading and watching videos.
OSK doesn't bother me, especially if I don't have to flip or slide my phone open.

Well, it either didn't have an instruction book or I didn't get one in the box. It wasn't the easiest option to find either. You have to put your finger on the USB symbol in the upper left hand corner and drag down a menu and select an option for it there. There's a sorta steep learning curve with this phone. It's like having a new OS sat in front of you which it sort of is.

It isn't like you are using a new OS. You are using a new OS.

Sprint in my area is very cheap: $54/month for unlimited 3G data, unlimited mobile-to-mobile (any carrier, any time) minutes, unlimited SMS/MMS messenging, and free roaming on Verizon's network.

It is also very reliable in my area. I never had a dropped call or loss of data connection where I work, where I live or where I go to school. All my friends and relatives live in big cities so I'm not worried about that either.

I think there should be a Pre vs. Droid vs. iPhone 3GS showdown listing unique operating system features, must-have applications, and nifty hardware functions of each

Forgot to mention: 450 minutes that are basically minutes for landlines not on a weeknight or weekday.

USB modem meaning a separate hardware device different from the phone or tethering with your phone via USB? By mobile broadband do you mean 3G EV-DO Rev A or something else?

I cannot officially tether with Sprint, but there is a third-party application that allows it.

Separate hardware USB modem, using Verizons 60 dollar a month 5gb national broadband connection.

Ha ha ha, you don't think I tried? What's funny is there isn't that much info out there yet. Customer service knows nothing about the phone either. I think Verizon/Motorola failed on their training.

If you can set up your droid to run android off of the sd card, problem fixed. That is the way I am running android on my vogue, but I don't know how it will effect the sd card's lifespan.
