Audio Problems

Specifically, the headphone jack. Let me explain.

Ever since I started using Linux, everytime I plug my headphones in, the sound will come through the headphones. But it also continues to come out the main speakers as well, which can be a really bad thing because generally you use headphones in quiet places, like the library. I have used two operating systems, both Linux Mint and Ubuntu, both GNOME operating systems, and have had the same problem. My computer is a Sony VAIO VGN-FW170J. Any help would be appreciated, and ASAP.

specifically for which program are you dealing with?
I am assuming these are regular headphones and not usb?

If it makes you feel any better Vista users are reporting a similar thing on a variety of sound cards

you can also access the system sounds by typing

Code:
alsamixer
in the terminal. Use "m" to mute or unmute things. Muted objects have the MM symbol

Any program. Firefox, media player, etc. It seems to be a somewhat pervasive problem.

I can also mute things by opening the Volume Control box and muting stuff there. Whatever I do either mutes nothing, or everything (speakers and headphones).
