Random Restarts w/W7 64bit

Long time no post, but I have recently upgraded from vista to w7. I did a fresh install and for some reason if I let the computer idle with or without a screensaver it will restart. I thought it was my oc, but I've narrowed it down to a possible driver issue after letting occt run for over 12 hours without any problems. I even let it go back to stock clocks to see if that was the issue. Has anybody else seen this with nvidia chipsets/videocards?

BTW, same hardware in sig except for dual 8800gt's , evga 750i ftw, 2 wd aajs 160gb drives in RAID 0, and 4 gig kingston kit. For some reason I also can't reach my old oc with this board, but that is another matter.

I had random restarts and it seems it was a dying hard drive as far as I can tell. I took it out and my other newer drive hasn't done it.

Tried that. Not the hard drives. I used a totally different drive and had the same problem. The alternate drive was even a pata instead of sata. I'm thinking it may be the nvidia chipset drivers but I can't test because I'm pretty sure I have the only one that exists for my chipset.

Never mind, I just found new drivers. I will test and report back.

That is what's weird. It just restarts like I told it to. No errors. Just the password screen. I guess I just need to sit in the room and wait for it to do it. I didn't have this problem with vista 64 bit.

Check the Event Viewer logs for any critical errors related to the time(s) of the reboots.

Event log says that winlogon.exe initiated shutdown. It gives no reason. Weird.

Sounds like it is doing automatic windows updates and restarting afterward. They will usually notify you though before it restarts.

Several things to check in regards to winlogon.exe errors. This one in particular. Here are a few ideas you could try. I listed them in the order I would try.

1) Try disabling all the ACPI settings in your BIOS. The fact that you say it happens when your computer idles might mean it may not be going into hibernate mode correctly. If that solves the issue, sleep/hibernate is most likely the cause.

2) Update your BIOS and GPU drivers to the newest versions.

3) There are several worms and viruses that can cause winlogon.exe failure. Try scanning for malicous code.

I have seen this issue occur in previous Windows versions as well.

I just remembered after reading this last post that I had a problem with hibernation. If I left the pc alone too long I woild come back and be unable to get the screen back up by moving the mouse like usual. I set it to "put the computer to sleep - never".

I have same issues with my Win7x64 - sometimes it restarts at night. As far as I could infer from logs, this happens due to Windows Update.

Also, check your power options to make sure it doesn't go to sleep.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've tried everything you've suggested and it still restarts. I'm thinking one of my drives is going bad even though it is pretty new. I ran a smart test and the same drive keeps failing. Someone suggested it earlier in the thread, but I had hoped that wasn't the case...

Thanks guys.

I had a HDD that hard-locked the whole PC when it hiccuped before it finally borked itself. It was just a data drive and didn't have to be in use at the time. If the drive giving smart errors isn't the main OS drive, try unplugging it and see if it still shuts down on you. If it's the OS drive, well, better get to backing up while you still can!

The latest version of Acronis should work. Not sure about others.
