Fighting dependencies in Arch

So I was trying to install Virtualbox (and did) however it wont launch due to a number of dependencies. I needed libstc++5 (which conflicted with an existing lib?) got that straightened around but virtualbox still wont run because it needs libSDL which I have tried to install, and it appears to have worked but it still can't find the lib

There has to be an easier way then this. This is why I left RPM distro's in the dust long ago.

I feel for ya. I tried installing some packages in Ubuntu without net access, so I was running sneaker net back and forth through the house. I finally gave up; the system beat me :^D

With Ubuntu its usually a matter of disabling all repos and making sure the cdrom repo is enabled (provided of course the package you want is in the default repos

)

That's funny, because using virtual box in Fedora now is like a one click process.

Use whatever OS floats your boat, I guess.

I am sure Fedora has gotten a lot better. I just had nothing but headaches dealing with yum/rpm. It was back on fedora 9, but it was a bad enough experience to sour my whole outlook on the process

Perhaps I misunderstand, but why the reference to RPM distro's when Arch uses Pacman?

The reference was to dependency hell which i have had more then my fair share of with RPM based distros

Did you install this using pacman? If so it should have installed all needed dependencies. I am running arch and installed vb, and its been working great.
