Still trying to figure out what to get for first build

I have been going back and forth between either x58 or p55 and priced out two separate rigs for each.

X58
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 $139.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX $99.99
Intel Core i7-920 $279.99
EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI $279.99
mushkin 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 6-7-6-18 $184.99
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB $94.99
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB $94.99
SAPPHIRE 100282SR Radeon HD 5850 1GB $259.99

$1,434.92

P55

COOLER MASTER HAF 932 $139.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX $99.99
Intel Core i7-860 $289.99
EVGA P55 FTW $219.99
mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 1600 7-7-6-18 $127.99
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB $94.99
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB $94.99
SAPPHIRE 100282SR Radeon HD 5850 1GB $259.99

$1,327.92

is there going to be a huge over clock potential versus either one? and any thoughts on either setup? also didn't think the cost was going to go up as fast as it did...

Is there no way to lower the cost if I want to go Intel? and 1500 is really my max budget but if I could get more around the 1000 dollar line that would be better

There is, though I wouldn't be the best to give you advice, so I'm going to try not to try looking up reviews of the parts you picked. double check that each part is compatible (ie: ram compatible with mobo) etc... but I'm sure by tomorrow some of those Intel lovers will post in here if not I'll try to find some information for ya

though I think most of them will tell ya go for the 920... also do you plan on overclocking, and what type of heatsinks and cooling will you be utilizing?

Build the X58. Use a DX58SO. It's cheap(er)
You don't need SLI.

I am hoping to do a stable overclock at around 4 ghz. I was told that the Prolimatech Megahalems is really hard to beat in terms of air cooling and as of now for cost reasons am steering clear of water cooling. Computer is mostly going to be used for gaming and running applications at ridiculously fast speeds

as of now I am going to stick with the 5850 but hope to run some Xfire in the near future with an extra 5850 or would that not show much of an improvement?

also my hd will be run in Raid 0, I know that won't be ridiculous fast compared to ssd or even a 10000 rpm drive. but how would two drives in raid 0 compare to one 10000 rpm drive?

Raid has a higher potential fail rate.

Do you really want a hard drive at this point? SSD's aren't expensive. I'd urge you to get a 128GB SSD and a 1TB slow cheap 'bitch' drive... That's what I'd do now.

nothing wrong with the mobo you have now but check out the gigabite UD3R for the i7920. under 200 bucks and a good board. it will still get you to 4ghz.

also going with a non-modular PS will cut another $50, but really it depends on what you prefer.

I thought the CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX was non-modular...and does anyone know how much faster a ssd would be compared to a raid 0 set up, will check prices of ssd though

The TX is non-modular. The HX series from Corsair is the modular ones. SSD is a different kind of fast. The access/seek times are almost non existent so if you were to load a level in a game it'd be very fast. Boot times would be reduced significantly. If you'd like to make an informed decision check out sites like Anandtech (honestly he's lead the field in research behind SSDs - at least from the consumer side of things).

Definitely seems like ssd are the way to go in terms of speed but for now I can't pay that much . Think I will just get one 1tb wb black drive and suffer through the slow speeds until I get a ssd. The price can really only go down for ssd and maybe after Christmas I can catch a good deal. Was thinking of the Western Digital VelociRaptor for now but if I intend on getting a ssd I am going to need the 1TB drive for storage. Unless there is some magical place people are getting these cheap cuz I am finding them at newegg for around $300

Someone recommending an Intel motherboard? First I have ever heard of that LOL

Think there is a microcenter in IL, get your CPU there, save about $70. (199.99 + tax but no shipping )

Might have better deals on mobos too.

I found 2 raptors in raid 0 with a spare backup drive to 1: be cheaper
2: offer more space
3: it is still very fast as my computer takes around 5 seconds to boot.

The guys that have RAIDed SSDs get around 20 seconds (from what I can remember).

With my barracuda's I get 40 seconds, so you should be nearly the 25 second mark.

Just use a stop watch... Programs just record the time you shut down and the time you boot your computer up and look at the difference...

forgot to mention that I want to either have SLI and Crossfire if I want to run either in the future. Also where is the best place to buy the 920 if I want to get a good chip to overclock?

Newegg is good for the chip
I dont think you really need *correction corssfire* for the 5850 unless you really want to....
