I'm having some problems getting my server to communicate at gigabit speeds. Everything is linking up at gigabit, but actual bandwidth is very poor: about 90 Mbit/sec measured by iperf.

I'm reasonably sure that the network setup itself isn't a problem (need to connect a box directly into the server to double-check), but even if it is I'm still wondering what I could do to tune my server for gigabit networking. Google has a few articles but I haven't found many that are very clear.

The server is running Gentoo (2.6.28-hardened-r9 kernel) and has a PCI Trendnet NIC using the latest r8169 driver. Any ideas on what could be done to get this network screaming?

Current setup:
QPI / VTT @ 1.36v
Noctua NH-U12P Single Fan Push config
8800GT
Antec P182
3x 1TB WD Black

Temps under full load are around 68-72C give or take, and that seems kinda high, especially if I want to squeeze more juice out of i7. I have a few ideas on how to lower temps but wanted to run the ideas by the fine folks here at OCF before I did something like swapping hardware / cases, or spent $, for no reason.

Option 1
Purchase Corsair H50
I suspect the P182 may be limiting air flow in the case. I have added the second Noctua 120mm fan that came with the heatsink to the front of the case, effectivly blowing air in over the GPU, to try and cool things down a bit. This does not seem to have helped much, maybe 2-4C. I had the HSF set up with Push / Pull but there is a Antec tri-cool fan that sits maybe 3 inches from the HSF pulling air out of the back of the case and also pulling air from the HSF. Did not notice any temp change after removing the Noctua Pull fan from the HSF.

If airflow is the issue would the H50 help cool things any better, or would I have issues cooling the radiator because of the air flow issues in the case? I have never done anything with water, so a complex water cooling set up is beyond my skill set, not to mention I am very broke, $50 for the H50 is pushing it.

Option 2
Move from P182 to NXZT Tempest.
The Tempest is an air flow beast! Already have the case, but it currently holds my 780i / Q6600. I could swap cases, but dont want the Q6600 (333x9 @ 1.26875) and the 2x 9600GT getting too hot either.

Maybe airflow is not the issue, and the CPU just runs crazy hot? I can post pics of the set up if that helps. Any guidance or suggestions are appreciated.

I have no spare hardware to test against, so please keep that in mind
The computer was failing to boot such that when powered up, it would turn itself off within a few seconds with any hardware configuration. Having had this problem before I went to get a new motherboard (old one was out of waranty and Asus was unsympathetic even though it had died 2 other times on me). So I just ordered the Asus M3A78-EM thinking that it should solve my problem. Just got it and put everything back together. Now it will turn on and remain on, but I am not getting any picture from either the 7900gtx or the onboard graphics.
Any ideas?

750GB WD SE,
SAMSUNG SH-S203B
Onkyo TX-SR506 via optical cable -> onboard sound

I'm fortunate to be a part of Intel Retail Edge program with a rockstar status, so in december I plan on for sure getting:
Intel® Core™ i7-860 processor
Intel® X25-M Solid-State Drive

Got a free copy of Windows 7 64-bit from my school (CSUMB)

And for now, I'm planning on using the same video card...

So that leaves the motherboard and memory.

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to get the Intel® Desktop Board DP55WG for $109 from Intel Retail Edge? Or should I spend more money and get a Gigabyte or Asus board? I'll probably want to overclock just a little bit, but overall I'm looking for the most stable and least amount of issues in a motherboard, and would be willing to pay around $150.

Also, what kind of memory should I get? It's been so long since I've looked at computer hardware I don't know what's best. A quick newegg search lead me to GSkill 4GB DDR3 1600 for $95. Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-193-_-Product

I've been extremely happy with my current GSkill, so would that memory be prime for whatever motherboard I end up getting?

I ordered some MX-2 to do my father's build tomorrow. I get the package out of my mailbox today and hear metal clanging inside. The last I knew, MX-2 shouldn't be metal. I open it up and there is a 2 1/2-3 1/2 hard drive mounting bracket inside that was supposed to go to someone with a similarly pronounced last name as mine.

I don't want the MX-2 anymore since I will be 500 miles away when it gets here and when I need it, but they are sending it anyway when I wanted a refund. I may be wrong here, but I don't think a refund is asking too much. They are sending a tag to pickup the wrong item. I should keep it. They are lucky I'm not the vindictive or thievery kind, but they'll have to wait to get it back until I get back.

Glad I didn't order anything important. Guess I get to use OCZ Freeze, MX-3, or IC7.

Whew, that was a lot of work. I've entered all the info from the reviews listed in the first post of the 5970 review roundup thread. I ignored 1680x1050 and below, I'm simply not interested in low resolution results, and noone who is considering one of these cards should even think of buying one until they have a real monitor ;)

Some of the data is sketchy, but I'm not here to judge, and just entered it as-is. I ignored a few games that were only tested on one or two sites, but the data for those games was very similar to what is shown. I also took liberties with things like lumping together COD4:MW/COD4:MW2 data and Crysis/Crysis Warhead data since most sites didn't test both and the results were similar.

Why, oh why.. Well, I was seeing results all over the place in various reviews. There's always someone in a thread who links to a specific review and says 'See, it's only 10% faster!' when there are other reviews showing a 40% difference in that same game with the same cards. This, I think, is a better way of doing it. You can look at the chart and see exactly what's happening with each game, and also see how each site did overall. The site-specific percentages are the overall difference among games tested at that resolution, barring the games I did not include due to small sample size. The FPS numbers are just an average of the FPS gotten in each game across all sites. Ditto for the difference percents. The number is how much faster the 5970 is compared to the GTX 295.

Big thanks to MattNo5ss for help with the spreadsheet stuff. Also thanks Earthdog for putting up the review list.

Can I get full quality audio from a BlueRay without using HDMI 1.3?!? I simply do not have the money to upgrade audio receivers with a receiver that will provide the level of current that my speakers needs! I am also assuming switching to 1.3 would require a new sound card and/or video card!

So, Can you get CD Quality (or Better) audio or better from BlueRays on all 6 channels without HDMI? Will the Asus Card or any other card provide this?

The Asus Xonar HD1.3 Card says it outputs full Blueray quality sound. I see reviews that it will require TMT to play it. The Asus Xonar also does not specify if HDMI is needed or not needed to play this?!?

If I need to switch to HDMI 1.3, do I need to buy a new Audio Card with a new Video Card, or does the Video Cards now handle the audio?

Please Help!?!

--> More Info

I am looking to buy a Audio Card. I had a Bluegears card that died on me. I am running onboard audio, and though I get a hiss at louder volumes so I want to upgrade!

My receiver and videocard/sound card, does not support HDMI 1.3! I am looking to buy a Soundcard, and was looking at the ASUS Xonar HD1.3 because it claims to support the Full Audio Sampling of BlueRays. However it does not Specify if you need HDMI to utilize this?!? I also see reviews that state that you need TMT to get full sound. The problem is that the Asus soundcard had a troubled start. It seems to have been improved into a very viable option, however finding recent details is hard since Google’s page rank is faulty since it provides older reviews and forum posts!

I hear mixed reviews on sound quality from the Asus, but the reported 120db/noise ration is the highest available. Reports, Reviews and Specs are hardly scientific studies. For all I know, some of these people might be playing there sound off poor quality audio setups.

I hear reports that the sound is "Downgraded to DVD levels". DVD runs DTS and Dolby Digital at SPDIF rates, which is around 300Kbps (for all 6 channels). This is a very low bitrate, and most studios compensate by almost muting out the rear channel on DVD's! When I play Bluerays, the rear channels come alive! Am I nuts?

Screen was flickering lightly just before I heard the sound and then it went blank. I shut the computer down and unplugged everything and started sniffing. The smell is coming from my dell 2407WFPb. I am in the process of trying to figure out how to disassemble it to perhaps at least see what went bad. Has anyone ever had this happen?

For a while now, I've wanted another motherboard that will only run four video cards. This would be primarily for folding, but I'd like to be able to overclock it heavily as well. My previous four card motherboard unfortunately was not very overclock-able.

I've been looking primarily at the EVGA four-way SLI Classified. The E762 specifically here. Though admittedly the $500 price tag is holding me back a bit. But it looks like I'm going to have a nice large tax refund (I had some over withholding on something), so I might be able to get this after the first of the year. The other motherboard that looks like it can do what I want is the ASUS P6T7, here, for about $100 less.

I plan on building first a benching station, and then later a custom case to put it in.

I realize that not many people here have that much experience with either of these boards, but I'm looking for ways to get the most out of my purchase. I figure I'll get a 920 processor, as it looks like a lot of people have had good luck overclocking them.

I will be water cooling the processor. I've noticed that at least for the EVGA, there is a water block that replaces most of the cooling for the motherboard. I've been limited before by not having enough active cooling for the chipsets on my motherboard. Is this a good addition for this motherboard? Am I likely to get any additional benefit for the additional cooling?

Also, feel free to chime in with any suggestions I might have missed.

I'm going to add them one at a time, and probably only have them air cooled, but I plan on running 4 GTX 295 cards in this system eventually. And yes, I'll probably have to PSU's as well. The video cards are for folding, but I will game occasionally. Though I don't plan on trying for four-way SLI.

Thanks in advance for your help.
