Hi, I just picked up a new lcd monitor. Its a compaq q1859 18.5". My problem is that when looking at lines on the monitor you see wavy lines and it looks like pixels jumping around. Is this monitor defective? Its plugged into the on board vga on the mother board.

does the mobo you're hooking it up with work with other displays ?

I just bought the pc and the monitor today. I dont have any other monitors to test it out with.

are you running on board video or do you have a card? If you do have a card what interface/brand/model is it? machine specs?

No it's just plugged into the mobo, its like there is a bad connection or something. When I accidentally put light pressure on the vga cable with my foot it got worse. This is the mobo http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01701270&lc=en&dlc=fe&cc=us&product=3928009&lang=fe It happens sporadically like right now its not doing anything. Earlier the lines and pixels were like static that phases in and out and just very glitchy.

It must be the computer because when I bring up the monitor menu you dont see it when the menu is on top of a glitchy spot. Why would the onboard graphics do that? How can I fix it or is it defective and should exchange it.

rma if you want to, otherwise get a graphics card and try it, hell it might even be the cable you are using to connect it.....it would help if you had another monitor/mobo to make sure

Yes, its best to test out with known good hardware. Can you bring the box to a friends house to test with another monitor? Or bring the monitor to a friends? Theres also a good chance it could just be the vga cable.

Well I plugged the monitor into my laptop and it was fine. I plugged it back into the new desktop and now its not glitching anymore. I already checked the connection once before so I dont know whats going on. I'm pretty sure it's the desktop. If I have to exchange it I'll be po'ed cause I spent a lot of time changing settings and getting bloatware off. I do plan on buying a video card but I still want the mobo to be functional so I guess if it happens again I'm taking it back.

Well I drove 45 min to the store, they checked it out and I couldnt get it to do the same thing so I said whatever and took it back home. Well now it's f***ing doing it again. It's recommended setting for the monitor is 1366x768 at 60Hz and thats what its set at. It wont let me change the refresh rate at all.

thats a strange resolution have you tried others, have you considered the cable you are using may be at fault, have you checked the video adapter to ensure there are no damaged vga ports,....machine specs?

LOL I checked everything but that. So I put it down to 1280x768 @60Hz and it looks like problem solved. I really like having the larger resolution though.... Is this a problem with the monitor or the on board graphics? If it's just because the mobo has crappy graphics if I buy a better graphics card can I enlarge the resolution without problems?

The link to the mobo is in my post above but here it is again http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01701270&lc=en&dlc=fe&cc=us&product=3928009&lang=fe

You could try installing a cheap graphics card and see if it fixes the problem, you are right about the native resolution, and the monitor should runa t it. Hp says "factory set" res is indeed 1366x768 at 60Hz, have you made sure that the correct graphic drivers and/or support software is/are installed?

Yeah I'm running the latest drivers for both the monitor and graphics, what a load of bs.

you could delete your old graphics drivers and download directly from nvidia onbard is a nVidia GeForce 6150SE, maybe try the 6 series drivers, i don't know if that would work, though

Oh well, I plan on buying a graphics card. 1280 is pretty darn close so I'm not losing much, they just shouldnt advertise 1366 if they cant make it work right. Another problem is downloading it seems like it never wants to go over 50k when my laptop using the same line and same server will go up to 500k both using firefox and windows firewall.
