Well I did it today, moved up from my old 17" 1280x1024 fun killer, to a 1920x1080 Samsung Syncmaster P2250 with 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 2ms response.

If anyone's thinking about getting this monitor go for it!. I got it on sale for 229$ Canadian.

Here's some screen shots. No crits so far, im happy with everything about it.

Just looking at the pictures I can see tremendous backlight bleed. The colors are nice, but the backlight bleed is an instant turn off for me.

I don't see anything, unless our talking about the reflection the light makes on the shiny surface at the top.

On the bottom, the whole bottom end of the screen is white washed.

On the bottom, the whole bottom end of the screen is white washed. If you're referring to the second photo, that is the flash causing the whitewash. Its not there in photo 1. Monitors are tough to shoot with a flash. I worked with another pro shooter years ago and he used to do double exposures to capture crisp monitors in shots. We would figure out how much time it took to get good monitor exposure, cover the screen with thick Black paper, light the scene, expose the film, pull the paper, burn in the screen. I thought it over kill and time consuming but hey when your getting $1500 a day to shoot take as much time as you need.

Unless you're talking about this.

If you notice on the images above, top pic is labeled camera flash off, bottom pic is with camera flash on. That is not bleed that your seeing, what your seeing is the camera flash reflecting of the edges and the surface of the screen itself.

*I also took these pics pretty quick, I was excited.
= D

Oh I also want to know in your opinion did I make the right choice? I could have gone for either

Samsung 2ms response, 1920x1080, 50,000:1 Contrast, 21.5" (That's what I bought)

or

Acer 5ms response, 1920x1080, 20,000:1 Contrast, 23"

I went with Samsung, cuz I like Samsung and the 50,000 contrast ratio. And I was a tad afraid 23" won't fit on my table well.

Does 50,000 contrast really make much of a difference over 20,000 or is it just useless after a certain point.

I know its a big difference from my last screen, but my last screen probably wasn't even a 1000:1. (On my last screen some games were hard to play because the black looked more like a darkish grey).

Lol, Show me a monitor with no bleed. Ive never seen a monitor with no bleed. That's a tiny amount that you cant even notice most of the time. Btw what monitor are you using?

Some GTAIV to fix your fancy:

Good looking monitor. Very deep blacks with vibrant color from your pics. Yeah I hate light bleed but I too have never seen a monitor without it. Luckily my Samsung 2220WM isn't that bad under 60% brightness and thats still very bright.

Oh and yes, I would also have gone for the Samsung. Good choice!

EDIT: no wonder I think your monitor looks good. Just been looking at the specs of mine, 1000:1 contrast ratio!! Time for a upgrade I think.

A 22" Acer X223BBD. I know it's not the best, but it was 150$ when I got it. So far I haven't noticed ANY blacklight bleed, and it's very crisp. Colors are great, but I can definitely see a difference between it and the 24" M-PVA panels I use on occasion (when my friend lets me use it). :)

I suppose I can take some pics next time I'm in game.

Ah yea I hear those are pretty good, for 150$ you can't go wrong.

1680x1050? Right. I also think they are like 2500:1 Contrast but they do have really good colors for their price and probably could rival and match some 200$ screens.

You know what, Monkey, I want to apologize to you. I spoke too soon. I realized after attempting to take pictures of my screen that all the pictures came out looking even worse than your screen. In person the backlight bleed is almost non-existent, but I saw things in the pictures that made me realize and whole heartedly believe that your back light bleed is exagerated by the camera.

But then again, this could also be not true based on what kind of camera either of us is using. I'm using the camera on a samsung I770 "Saga" smart phone. It's 1600x1200 (2MP) and while it can take some decent pictures they've always been grainy and unsatisfying.

i would guess a plasma wouldn't have backlight bleed :)

Don't worry about it mate, I noticed the same thing too.

I'm just using a nikon coolpix thing, its ok. I think most cameras will exaggerate the effect. My GTAIV pics turned out pretty well.

Id say the bleed on my screen is non-existent, till you go onto a pitch black background or something that gets really dark and even then its about 25-35% of the effect the camera actually makes it out to be. So its not bad. Your Acer monitor is pretty tempting the 150$ price point is amazing cost/value, think if you bought a couple of them what you could do. :)

Since someone mentioned 'dark blacks' then the contrast ratio - fyi the '50,000:1' contrast ratio is either marketing hype or a lie, depending upon how you want to look at it. It's a dynamic contrast ratio meaning that they take the best possible scenario for what the screen is displaying to get the top and bottom numbers of the ratio. The screen can never have that amount of contrast ratio in a single image. 'Tis FUD just like most other numbers in monitor specs.

That's the thing with monitors and headphones... they're almost entirely personal preference, and what you enjoy and can't stand. I like my TN panel, and I also like the awy M-PVA panels look. But let's face it... 150$ for my display sure beats 700$ for a M-PVA 24. :\

That sticker is tough to get off, ill try again today but its feels like its on a metal badge or something to help reinforce it, I got 1 of the stickers off. Good thing is they don't leave any stickiness behind, thank god, lol.

Syncmasters are great. I'm using a SyncMaster 22WM I got back in November for $150. My brother bought it for his friend, cost him $330, the friend never used it, needed some money, turned around and sold it to me for $150. Best purchase to date. :D

Ok, I can't disagree with that but it's not the point of my post whatsoever which is that dynamic contrast ratio numbers are fake made up marketing numbers.

It had everything to do with your post. If you think about it, if we have no way of quantifying the product reliable (without reading eons of reviews), it brings you back to strictly personal preference and value.
