View Full Version : Backlight bleed on 3 new monitors? Help!
I currently use a Dell E197fp 19inch lcd,(1280x1024 native resolution),which has no backlight bleed, no flaws whatsoever. I've used it for almost 3 years now. I wanted to replace a CRT that was on my second pc so i went monitor shopping. First, i purchased a refurbished Dell E228wfp 22 inch and it's horrible. Serious backlight bleed issues, it turns itself off and then back on while booting into windows or gaming (when the screen changes). So i'm still in the process of returning it.. OK, so right before Christmas i bought a Samsung 2443bwx 24 inch monitor. Great picture, but more backlight bleed all around. So i returned it. Now i have an Acer V223w 22 inch, and it's bad as well... Why is backlight bleed such an issue with newer monitors? Once again, my current monitor is PERFECT. Is this something that all monitors above 19 inches have? I wanted to take the leap into widescreen, but from what i've seen so far they are anything but perfect. Any help and/or info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, i use my pc for web browsing, watching movies, gaming...pretty much everything. :bang head

newer, but usually cheaper monitors.. those are all TN panels are they not?
in the LCD world, you get what you pay for unfortuantly, and it is always best to read reviews before buying LCD's to check for these issues.
Some companies have lines of LCD that just have really bad backlight bleed.
now, do you look for it? are you using your LCD normally and notice it, or you turn it on with a black screen and turn off all your lights and then see it?

Yes they are all TN panels including my 19 inch. I did check some reviews. Apparently Samsung is ranked pretty high up. But for $400, i'm not dealing with an imperfect monitor. It would be different if my 19 inch monitor had backlight bleed. No i didn't "look" for it. It's very noticeable as soon as the screen is black. I don't watch movies in the dark either..

What monitor are you using?

i have a dell 20" ultrasharp, but turns out this ultrasharp is a TN panel, dam dell, i dont notice any back light bleed, i seldom have "just" a black screen on thought, desktop wallpaper, gaming alot and alot of Inet usage on OCF which is mainly black and i dont see it.... i know when i had my cheap dell 24' TN LCD i could find backlight bleeding if i looked for it and made an all black screen, i think MOST LCD"s you will see back light bleeding if you look for it...

I'd suggest an IPS panel or VA panel monitor. The response time is generally not as fast as TN panels, but they have great colors and very little light bleed from my experience. Also, the viewing angles are around 178 degrees and they usually have tons of inputs, like component, HDMI, DVI, VGA, Composite, and S-Video.
Here is a list of LCDs and there panel type:

I don't have the link of what to look for when searching for monitors not on that list, but generally the viewing angle that high is only available in a VA and IPS from my experience, but I could be mistaken.
I have a BenQ FP241W 24" and I love it. So many inputs, it's like a TV.

All types of LCDs can have bleed, my 19" is an MVA and it looks like spotlights are shining out into the center. It is very very subtle but there if you look in a dark room.
Both the T220 and L227WTG-PF I have had and returned had bleed around edges. T220's is worse, but it is still by far a better looking screen.
Have a BenQ G2400WD on the way I will report back. I expect some bleed though.
