Can I get one of these Apple displays to work with windows and ubuntu? or will it be just easier to set up a second workstation instead of using a DVI/KVM switch?

Just to be clear: One PC has dual boot Windows XP and Ubunto; Second PC is a Mac

TIA

OK, I was just over at the Apple site and found this:

"Windows PC and graphics card that supports DVI ports with dual-link digital bandwidth and VESA DDC standard for plug-and-play setup..."

So that answers my first question. Now, wazzup with this DVI port stuff?

Dual-link digital bandwidth means your video card has to push enough pixels to be able to drive the video on the display. If the max res and refresh rate are too low the display will not work, or worse you could damage it.

Look at the specs of the Apple Cinema displays and double check your video card to see if they are compatible. The easiest way would be to check the optional video cards for the Mac Pro towers and see if your card measures up.

Thanks for the advice Blackstar. I found this HP display which me thinks is the same thing but with HP logo instead of Apple. They cost just about the same (retail), and as far as I can tell, have identical specs.

It's been a while since I upgraded my rig so I'm kinda ignorant on new technology. Time to read the Stickys!

You are welcome. :)

I believe Apple's panels are made by Samsung or LG for the most part and a little digging will reveal the exact make and model. I know for a fact a few years ago there was one Dell model that was the exact same one as Apple's. It offered more options for input and output and was selling for far cheaper. So if you can get the same thing, (or better) for the same or less money I would definitely recommend doing that.
