The first thing that you should be aware of when using a T.V as your Display is that you are going to be restricted in resolution! You may not always get to set the screen to what ever resolution that you want even if you screen says "MAX RES 1366 x768".
Personally with a Samsung 32" LCD HD TV and a ATI x1900 under windows vista ultimate with the latest catalyst drivers the only video options available where 800x600 1024x7?? 1366 x768.
I think 12?? x ??? was available as well... but anyways my point is you might not get to chose your display which in some cases can be a pain when play certain games though I think it will be fixed once more and more gamer's start using t.v's as screens.

Yes, the 22" LG will give you a better picture because it his a higher resolution. This is assuming you have proper high-def content to view on it (if you're just watching DVD's or regular standard definition television I wouldn't expect much of a difference). The 22" LG supports 1080p while the 26" units are only 720p. All of them are going to look better than a standard non-HD television, but assuming you are viewing from an appropriate distance the 22" one will look sharper and have more detail because it has more pixels.
What I did for a spare room TV is similar to your last option. I purchased a 24" Gateway LCD monitor, and I use it part of the time as a monitor for gaming. The rest of the time I use it to watch TV via an external tuner. Then again, I knew going in that I wanted primarily a monitor.

Yeah, the 26" should look really nice.
