Over the past couple weeks I've noticed some ghosting of images, similar to that of an older plasma. I didn't even know this was possible with an LCD, although I guess due to it's age of around 3 years it might be on it's last legs? This is only really noticeable on a blank canvas while designing, for instance if I go from this screen over to photoshop I will still see the white type area... here is an 'artist interpretation' :screwy:

I don't notice this at all while gaming but still think it warrants a new monitor, hey any excuse right!? I've heard the new dell 20" monitors aren't as good as they used to be, something about TN panels even in the ultrasharp series?

Should I go with another 20" like the $234 Dell E207WFP, perhaps run them side by side... or will I be disappointed with the quality compared to my 2005FPW?

Maybe go 24"... the Dell E248WFP is a reasonable $379 or the considerably more expensive UltraSharp 2408WFP?

This is mainly for 'work' where color interpretation is important, although if I have to spring for the $600 2408WFP I might have to wait a while, or leave the wife... either or...

The 2408WFP is quite a nice monitor, especially considering the work you're doing.

With regards to your current monitor; LCDs don't get the same 'burn-in' that CRTs did. The effect displayed in the image you posted should be able to be remedied by running a very graphical screensaver for awhile, up to a few days even.

Really? wow that's good to hear, so any screensaver that has lots of colorful graphics? I guess I could leave it running over night for a few nights in a row, see if it helps. Thanks for that!

What you're experiencing is called Image persistence. I have two (now one, since i replaced one with a 32" sharp aquos) 2005fpw's, only one of them exhibits image persistence. The one with the image persistence is my secondary monitor so depending on the type of background i use or what windows i leave open on it, it can be noticeable but rarely bothers me. I only really notice it on certain colors too, especially on gray backgrounds.

If you just turn off your monitor when you're not using it, it should help.

^ "Image Persistence" is the correct term I believe. Regardless, the effect is not permanent. UDPixel (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Undead_Pixel_d4836.html) is a good tool, although any screensaver heavy on graphics would be a safe bet. Just remember it could take 72hrs+ to 'free' the pixels. Hey maybe thats what Vista DreamScene is for!?

Nice interpretation :) Not a burnin but still a PITA. Both my 2005's have absolutely horrible "persistence" after few hours of static windows. The 2405 OTOH exhibits no such issues even in the area where Object Dock is parked 24/7
