I have the Acer 22" x223wbd monitor and I love it. Except when It comes to DVDs. I use the VLC media player, and all my dvds look grainy and there are horizontal lines across the screen like, well i dont know. I could try to get a screenshot. Is this common for LCD monitors to be poor for DVD playback?

Ive never tried watching an actual DVD, but DivX movies run fine.. and watching TV through SVID in is fine.. that doesnt seem right. Have you tried other media players to rule it out as a possibility?

I personally use MPCStar 2.2 (I dont like what theyve done with v2.3+.. removing support for audio? Thats stupid.).

Do you get the same in WMP? Winamp etc?

I havent tried in other players because I have to find the codecs and install them, which Im to lazy to do. And its my understanding they cost money. Divx Works great for me too. I think I know the problem however. Its not in HD. I right clicked the screen while it was playing and saw the zoom ratio. I put it at 1:1 and it didnt even take up a quarter of my screen. =/ When enlarged to fit the screen, it stretches the pixels to be 3 or 4 pixels therein lies the problem. So I think its just the poor quality that the dvds are recorded at. Its not a bother when your 5 feet away, lying on the bed so I dont think Ill change anything. Unless theres some kind of quick fix for this problem.
Thanks though! :D

Hmm.. I guess as long as youre happy and you cant notice it, its all good :) But it is nice to know that your monitor is working correctly. Thats a really weird problem youre having, I havent heard of it before.. sorry I couldnt be much more help! :(

I'm shooting from the hip here but I had a similar problem today.

For some reason my dvd player crapped out so I switched over to the laptop to finish the movie. I haven't watched a DVD on it for years so I quickly learned I didn't have the necessary DVD decoder to watch DVDs. :bang head

I downloaded VLC and it played it perfectly. However, the screen was really grainy and the picture was a little off. This never happened before when I used WMP 10 and the proper decoder in the same system.

My vote goes to VLC. I know some people swear by it but I hate the quality. Try a different player and see if the problem persists.

Grr you have to buy codecs if you want to go the WMP 10 route

Switch to KMplayer (http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php). It will playback DVDs without paying anything and its a kick butt player. Otherwise, you can get the full Klite codec pack. It comes with a stripped down version of Cyberlink's mepg2 decoder.

I like the CCCP.

I use Media Player Classic with it and everything works great.
