Well guys, I'm going from a Samsung 206BW to one of these bad boys.

I need help choosing between either, I'm using this for doing research on Immunology over the web (simple images and lots of text) and a massive amount of gaming on my xbox 360. (hence why I love the component cable in.) And probably a movie once a week when I need to keep the wife happy.

I have one small light above me in this room and a window is directly behind me with blinds though the blinds are quite effective at keeping any glare or sunlight at bay.

I've heard great things about the Dell, but the 6ms response time concerns me. I want as little ghosting as possible. Of-course, I've heard the colour reproduction is awesome.

Fanboys, owners, anyone. Please chime in, if you have the monitor or have an opinion on it let me hear you. If you would recommend a different monitor then go ahead. My budget is around 600-800$

Thanks!

AFAIK the Dell kicks ass, as long as its the good model and not the one with the banding issues I think it was.

I've had a WFP HC, even got a thread about it somewhere in the display section, and here's the bottom line: everything on it hardware-wise, works (1:1, component and VGA work flawlessly with Xbox 360, no issues w/ DVI, blah blah blah, and the banding is gone), BUT, for gaming, forget about it. The HC is perfect for photo editing and other apps that don't have things constantly shifting on the screen (the HC has a BAD overdrive bug, makes gaming virtually unbearable). I've seen the Gateway before in Best Buy and at a friend's house, and I personally would buy one if I had the money (no ghosting, everything works, 1:1 scaling on everything, no banding, FAST FAST FAST), only issue I have, other than no money, is that it's a TN panel, which means a little bit more backlight bleed that you'd find on something like the Dell Ultrasharps, and the viewing angles can be a bit of a pain (people say if you're dead on it's perfect, but I can't help but notice that the shift is directed downwards, so even at eye-level, a section of the top is a bit darker than normal, lean it forwards to fix it and the bottom gets too bright, ect...). You can find the Gateway at any Best Buy if you want to take a look for yourself (I'd recommend it), and you can see samples of the Dell HC at just about any Dell kiosk in most malls. Do your homework on this, and get a feel for the monitors in person to see if any of the quarks you'll hear about from us actually bother you. If they don't then by all means go for it, but DO SOME RESEARCH, trust me :p I'm still tied up with Dell about sending back my 2407WFP-HC so I can get my $$$ back and finally upgrade my rig >.< Let us know what you decided to get!!!

Thanks for the awesome responses, I'll go and checkout the gateway. The Dell monitor might be harder to find but I will do my best!

Thanks for the input! If anyone owns a Gateway I'd appreciate some input as well.

I've been reading around at various forums regarding the FHD2400. I did alot of research before I bought my Sammy 206BW and it's an awesome gaming lcd.

The only complaint I've heard about the FHD2400 is that it uses a TN panel. People were woeing over the fact that they had to use such an inferior panel ect ect ect, however, after a moment of research I realized that the Samsung 206BW was a TN as well.

Ha. I'm going to go checkout the FHD2400 probably Friday or Saturday. Will update.

i have 6 of the gateways in my office, and i love them

the only difference i see between those 6 and the 10 or so dell 2407's we have in some of the other IT peoples' offices are that the gateways are shiny and the dells are dull. aside from that, the picture quality on both is EXCELLENT.

Well guys, good and bad news. Found a good program to test monitors with. Fired it up on my Samsung 206BW worked beautifully and my monitor passed with flying colours.

Loaded the program on a flash drive and went to my local best buy. tried it out on the Gateway 2400 (was running through a very descent computer) it failed the test horribly. Contrast was terrible compared to my Samsung. Then went and tried it on a HP 2408. And it looked pretty good.

I don't know though, nothing is touching my 20 inch samsung right now. The guy at best buy didn't know much so i instructed him. Nice kid though.

I'm thinking about waiting. But at the same time I really wanna game in 1080p on my 360.

Suggestions?

Do you have a budget? Is a larger full on HDTV an option? Or does it have to be a computer monitor, per say.

My budget is around 800-900 although I would like to stay below that. I suppose I could go full on HDTV but I hear the response times aren't nearly as nice.

And in all likleyhood it would be used as a computer monitor unless I din't sell my samsung 206, but then, desk space would begin to become a premium.

I have both the Dell 2407 (non-HC version) and the Gateway FHD2400 (I also have the uber-crap Dell E248).

The Dell 2407 is superior for gaming. The Dell 2407 is superior for use as a TV (although really, it's lousy as a tv too -- needs alot of calibration). The FHD2400 has bad backlight leakage, making it lame for dark movies.

The FHD2400, as a TN screen, just can't keep its colors uniform. If you move ever so slightly, the colors shift. It's a photo-editor's nightmare.

Where the FHD2400 really shines, however, is basic desktop work. The contrast is far superior, making it a joy to use when say, browsing the web or doing research. I use it as my main desktop screen and for that purpose, I've been very pleased with it.

I bought the FHD2400 due to the fact that I keep hearing about ghosting in the 2407. So far it looks awesome.

When I brought it home my wife was like, "thats huge, why do you need that?" Then I started playing Mass Effect and she was like, "wow" and kicked me off and played the rest of the day.

So far I have the wife seal of approval. I'll post some pictures with a more indepth review soon.
