Window cleaner and paper towels...
You are not going to scratch the monitor unless you use rocks or sandpaper.

Paper or other wood pulp cloths aren't really the best idea. Chances are it won't be a problem even over the long term but it's less than ideal. Get a cheap microfiber cleaning cloth from an auto parts store, I got a pair for ~$4 from Autozone and I just use them with water to clean my screens.

It's not about scratching it, I read somewhere that window cleaner, such as Windex, is harmful to the anti glare coating on the screen. I have seen some older laptops that the surface of the screen seems smudged and even to have thin spots in the coating. The typical LCD screen is perfectly shiny like the newer laptop and LCD screens(like a sheet of glass) but with a coating to prevent glare and it can be removed by chemicals. Personally to clean my screens I bought a bottle of LCD screen cleaner from Staples for like $5 (4 fl oz), have been using the same bottle for a couple years on 5 monitors, and a soft cotton cloth. Seems to work great for me.

Yeah, Windex is too abrasive IMO. Water works fine.

wiping hard won't hurt it.To a point. You can crack the LCD screen by applying too much pressure. ;)

wiping too hard could damage it. :)Punching is also a bad idea :D
