View Full Version : Need a video card for a 30"

okay. I'm getting a 305T(Thoughts on this vs. competition?)
I have a Sony 24" now. I think I'm going to use both.

The only game I really play is CSS and right now my 6800 vanilla does an *ok* job of powering my screen. So I guess I'm going to need something pretty powerful, but not insane to power this thing for all 2d and CSS.

Noise is an issue, I don't want something with a crazy loud fan. I guess ~$300 is a good price range but if a $200 card is more than enough then that's fine. I don't really care about 3dmark scores or any of that stuff.

Also my motherboard is a DFI Lanparty non SLI if that helps. I'm pretty sure it has two PCI E slots, hard to tell with that big cooler(that I'll have to replace :( ) in the way.

Thanks!

First, on the monitor I would go with a Dell 3007WFP-HC. Since the new 3008 (non-HC) is out, they have shifted the price down to $1050. The Dell has an S-IPS panel, which is much superior to the Samsung's S-PVA panel. The Dell also has a lot better response time / input lag than the Samsung. The Dell is simply a steal at this price!

Dell Sale: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=3007WFPHC&s=dhs

Here are the specs of the two:

30": Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC
2560x1600 (16:10)
Panel: WG S-IPS (LG.Philips LM300WQ1); true 8-bit, 16.7M colors
Image Delay (rt+lag): 0 - 11.5 - 27
Specifications: Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC
HDCP Compliant: Yes

30": Samsung SyncMaster 305T
2560x1600 (16:10)
Panel: WG S-PVA (Samsung LTM300M1); true 8-bit, 16.7M colors
Image Delay (rt+lag): 22 - 29.3 - 33
Specifications: Samsung SyncMaster 305T
HDCP Compliant: No

As to your vid card dillemma, the biggest problem you will face is the high resolution needs a lot of memory bandwidth. I would think you need something in the realm of an 8800GTX to be able to really use the thing effectively in gaming. Perhaps a newer 8800GTS (G92 core revision) might suffice with the smaller memory bandwith, but I wouldnt count on using Anti-Aliasing.

My 2c.

It's pretty heated between the 305T. IPS on the 3007 but a lot of reviews are saying the 305T outshines the 3008 so I'm going to look at some panels before I buy. I have a red/green deficiency so my color abilities aren't that great.

MODS

Could you move this to general video? I posted this in the wrong section, this is a video card question not a monitor question really.

I'm using an ultra with the 30", get about 300fps on an improved deagle map.

I have 2 - 8800 GTX and noise really isn't a problem. The cards do pump out crazy amounts of heat however and their own fans aren't up to the task of properly cooling them down. For my setup I had to install additional cooling to pinpoint this problem. However, as you'll only be using the one card this probably won't be as much of an issue for you.

Edit I just noticed that you are going a 30", not a 24". I would think you would want a 768MB card for that. My Ultra uses about 510MB when playing 1920x1200 8xAA & 16xAF. So 2560 is gonna run out of VRAM at the 512MB Setting.

I would try the HD3870 first on your new 30" and if that comes up short you know you'll need either a dual card setup or a 8800GTX, 8800 ULTRA, or 3870x2

If you're looking for a single card solution with more than 512MB of memory I don't think 300$ is enough, unless you can find a 8800GTX for that low.

I think the best option would be to get 2 2900PROs, for ~300$ that will give you 1GB of 256bit GDDR3 memory. (But like you said your mobo might not support 2 cards)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102717 - seems like the cheapest and best card if you're after memory

Well I bought an 8800GT 512MB. The 30" isn't here yet so I'll let you know how things turn out but it's going at max settings. (16xQSAA 16xAF etc) on the 24" so I don't think it will be *too* much of an issue, I'll keep you updated!

Again, I *only* play CSS.

I was reading on the dell website about purchasing a 30in monitor. It says you need to have a video card with dual-link DVI-D compatibility. Does this mean the graphics card needs both dvi slots connected (2 cords from gpu to monitor). Or do you need a certain type of dvi cord?

You need the correct cord and a vid card that will support that resolution. You only need one cord. DVI-D (dual link) uses all the pins on the plug. Single link does not and has a gap in the middle.

Heres the cable I purchased for my HP LP3065c:

Check this out also for details on DVI:

ahh ten-4
I was under the impression that you needed 2 cables (dual dvi). Good to know, im going to be purchasing this guy (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=222-7175).. as soon as I get a few paychecks saved up!

I think I found what you are looking for. On the slickdeals.net site they are listing a 8800GTX for $270AR. This is awfully cheap for this card. One would assume it is because of the 9800's rolling out.

Heres the link to the deal...CLICKY (http://slickdeals.net/?permadeal=12228#direct_deal_12228)

Or directly to ZipZoomFlys site HERE (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=322843)

And to make it easy... the rebate :) (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/rebate/ZZF_Rebate_US_08-11006-VGA$50.pdf)

The card is eVGA so the brand is top notch as well.
