I have an older dell flatscreen thats nineteen inches, and runs in 1280x1024 (which is close to non widescreen 1080, or at least 720). My 360 has an hdmi out port. My question is if I get an HDMI-DVI adapter, can I use my monitor as my tv.

Yes, but you'll have to set it to 1280x1024. Which means that, at best, you'll be able to view 720p (with bars top and bottom). I did the same thing with my 360 over VGA on my VX922 (19") until I got my 24", it'll work, you just wont have a HUGE picture, but the quality (720p) will be there.

You physically will not be able to run that resolution. I'm assuming you have an lcd?
To run 1080 you'll need to get a monitor that has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The 1080 stands for 1080 lines of verticle resolution and thus unless your monitor can support that high of a resolution you won't be able to run the monitor in 1080i/p.

Monitors with 1050 veritcal lines can accept and display a 1080p signal. It just whether the manufacturer allows that signal to be displayed in the first place. My Sceptre, at only 1680x1050, accepts a 1080p signal via component in.

I currently own a 2007WFP with max resolution of 1680 x 1050 which I know is not 1080 but some say they have had monitors that will accept the 1080 signal.
Anyone have an idea if this is a good monitor to retire to a small tv as a HD monitor? What kind of setup would you reccomend? It can accept 1 x DVI-D - 24 pin digital DVI ¦ 1 x VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15) ¦ 1 x composite video input - RCA ¦ 1 x S-video input
