View Full Version : my computer shakes if i use a desktop fan or electric toothbrush
the spinning pattern creates a magnetic field my computer shop told me.
Any1 know the approximated radius from the computer I should have such devices?
I usually just have fans under the table .

Are you talking about the monitor? or the computer physically shaking?
I'm assuming you mean monitor as you mentioned magnetic fields, which would indeed affect CRT monitors.
Depending on the strength of the magnet, probably 3 or so feet would be fine, unless it's a real strong magnet.
If you see any permanent discolorations, just degauss the monitor.

I have 8 fans and a three dc motors in my computer. If your case shakes, put it on a sturdier surface.
display part shakes. the screen, etc. MAGNETIC fields

Perhaps the best way to fix the problem would be to brush your teeth in the bathroom. . .
Either that, or upgrade your CRT to an LCD. I believe LCDs arent affected by the magnetic field affects that a CRT is. If an LCD is a little out of your budget, stick with brushing your teeth in the bathroom.
I think the radius of affect would be proportional to the square root of the intensity of the magnetic field. Roughly meaning that the stronger the magnetic field (electric motor), the larger the radius of affect, but with diminishing returns. Roughly guessing, I would say 3-4 feet is a safe distance for fans, toothbrushes, etc. . . If there are materials inbetween (thick desktop), then the distance could be less without causing an affect.

my parents' crt does the same thing. the bottom left corner shakes a little all the time. i think it is because of the computer sitting on the floor
Try degausing the monitor if it supports it, it helped me
My Trinitron did the same thing when I had a window fan running close to it. I just scooted it down the desk a little. :)

Yeah, other than buying magnetically shielded devices for around your computer, there's not a hell of alot you can do to be honest.
