17" LCD, limited to 1024x768
52" HDTV, 1080p jazz
Ati HD2600XT connected to both (VGA / HDMI)
Is it possible to run each display in its own resolution? Catalyst limits me to clone mode (which limits to 1024x768 and looks like a$$) or extended desktop which is pointless in my uses.
Software? Hardware? I thought I had what was necessary.

ummmm. Lets see if I am getting this straight. You want to have the same desktop displayed on both screens (ie cloning) but you want to have it at different resolutions? Impossible. The only way you could run both screens at different resolutions is using extended desktop.
Think about it, a higher resolution means more desktop space so how could you display that on a lower resolution monitor? You could just cut off a bunch of it but I cant see how that would make any sense.
You talk of uses. Tell us what they are and maybe we can get a better idea of what you want/need.

you don't want to clone the display. Lime moen said, clone is impossible to run at 2 different resolutions. You want to extend onto the second screen, so you can just drag stuff over to it.

There is no such thing as dual Indepedent displays?
This setup is used for college lecturing and frequent department meetings. We broadcast and receive AV signals from over 10 classrooms statewide. The crappy little LCD is actually an iPanel that you write on with a stylus to interact with webpages/powerpoint/etc. Distance sites see video feed, vcr/dvd output, or the computer screen - AT this classroom the LCD is used in conjunction with the iPanel to create a multimedia whiteboard where the professor can write, show Google Earth, etc.
90%+ of the Professors I have met can barely use email, they are not to be trusted to rotate their head 90º, see the HDTV, and drag apps from the iPanel to an extended desktop.
