View Full Version : Old CRT dying?

I've got an old NEC 4FGe CRT that's been sitting around not being used for a long time (6+ years). I'm not sure how old it is, but I would guess that we've had it for at least 10 years. I plugged it into an 8600GT the other day so I could install Windows in a new computer for my dad, and everything that the monitor displayed was solid blue. In the BIOS, nothing was readable except for what was selected. I messed around with all the knobs on the monitor, and turning the brightness and contrast all the way up does make things readable, but barely - there is still a bright blue tint to everything. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is it just dying? I've also noticed that it makes a relatively loud, very high pitched squeal when it's on, and I didn't notice that yesterday. Thanks.

Could be that one (or more)of the "guns" is dead. You could try to swap a different cable (a long shot).

I wonder if you leave it on for a while if it gets a)worse b)same c)better?

I'll leave it on more today, but I left it on for about an hour last night to see if that would do anything, and it didn't seem to have any effect on the color. Also, I can't use a different cable because the original one is soldered to the monitor. Thanks for your suggestions though.

I tried degaussing, which had no effect, but what is power cycling?

Power cycling is disconnecting the power. Like you do on a cable modem.

Hate to say it but "He's dead Jim"

Try running Nvidia monitor calibration if you haven't.
It could be just be color is off lots. The old Sony g410 I'm using was 50% green, but ran the calibrator and it's good as new.
