View Full Version : D's new tv- 47" 1080p westinghouse
just got a new tv today to replace my aging 42" 720p olevia :santa:
i must say, im very pleased by this unit..1080i HD content from comcast looks good, 360 looks great (@ 1080P via VGA), wii @ 480p looks aright as does SD contont
pixxx (not very good, ill get more later):

now, currently i have a dvd player that upconverts to 1080i
and a 360 hd-dvd drive which lets me do 1080p over the VGA
i want to get a standalone player to get a bit more vivid colors and it wouldnt cost me too much... is the toshiba HD-A2 a good way to go for about $250? - ill get $150 from my 360 drive and another $50 from my current dvd player. or should i go a step up and get a player that outputs 1080p vs 1080i...
Aging
Very nice, I can't stand to have my computer hooked up to my current LCD, looks like crap.
try watchnig the TV with the W logo OFF.(option in the submenu of TV) I find it much less distracting especially in the dark.

How does a PC desktop look on these Westy's @ 1080P compared to something like a Dell 2407? I've been pondering buying a Westy since the prices came down to the $999 range (and lower) for the 37" W3. They seem like a killer multi-purpose HDTV/PC Monitor combo...

since when do you call a basement a room D94 ;) well at least it looks like a basement
you really should do some re-wiring in the back of your tv..
and it looks like you might be using 1 too many surge protectors on that outlet near your pc lol

I've got some credit there just burning a hole in my pocket.. hmmmm.. :)
I know you commented that 1080i input looks great, but how does it handle fast action with 1080i (sports, etc.)?

yeah, they're clearncing out the screens..so really it depends on how well you can get them to go down in price...
i just watched some NBA @ 1080i via comcast, looks great, no bluryness or anything of the sort :D
what sorts of problems does your tv emit when playing 1080i?

as far as i know nothing.
i wouldnt recommend using anything but a single surge protector per outlet.. at least thats what the power dude told me
i would recommend instead of 2 semi decent quality to get 1 nice big high quality.. might cost a pretty penny ($100+) but at least your not overloading a socket

while i deffinetly appreciate the suggestion, iv had everything running flawlesly for years, and actually before i had 3 of those surge protectors running off one outlet lol, which was even worse, so im pretty sure ill be aright

Ahhhh, OK, I just looked at the title and then re-read the post - this is a 42" Westy. I thought you found one of the soon-to-be-released 47" displays.
Image quality on the Westinghouse 37w3 is borderline when feeding it a 1080i input. From what I understand, it's the same scaler as found in the 42" model. It's only an issue if you're sensitive to this (1080i on my old Toshiba CRT HDTV was much better). There is slight artifiacting and blurriness with 1080i input, and it may only be noticeable if you're running an HD benchmark and looking for these types of anomolies.
You may also be getting higher quality (higher bitrate) HD channels on Comcast than I'm getting on TimeWarner.

If you check out the huge 37w3 on avsforum, you'll see some examples of poor 1080i deinterlacing.

Also there is a thread over at [H] regarding this panel on sale, but for $1399.99. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1187576
Soo that is very weird that you got it for only $1100 indeed.

Its available with free shipping for $1206 and $1293, both from reputable online stores, TechOnWeb and Beach Camera. I'd get one now myself, but really cant afford it as I have other expenses at this moment. Basically, it was either a new system, or a new TV. The system won out.
I'm referring to the 42" model on the above prices. The 47" D94 got was a steal @ $1100.

D94 got the older 42" model, not the just-released 47" model!
D94, PM a mod and change the title of this thread please!

Now that I think about it, and I see the price on the receipt, I think someone from BB marked the 47" with the 42" price.
$1189 was about the price I remember from the BB website when they had it up for the 42".

Nope. d94 got the now-discontinued 47w1. The new model is now $1799 at BB.
Two different 47" Westinghouse displays.
Old 47" (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:FYFqQ1Aii94J:www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp%3Ftype%3Dproduct%26id%3D1158317794037+ westinghouse+47%22+bestbuy.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us&client=firefox-a) (google cache)
New 47" (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8346685&st=westinghouse+47%22&type=product&id=1175902657231)
Comparison on this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=851860) avsforum thread. The newer 47" is a more mature, full-featured panel. I may spring for a TX- model myself, as the new models have far more calibration options.

I just noticed the newer model at WH. If thats the case for the heavy discount, I wonder if any of the local BB still have the older model LVM-42w2. Its original price was close to $1200. Maybe they're well below $1000 now that a newer 42" is available as well. Seems like I need to do some shopping....

In some respects, yes. Looks like there are quality-control issues with the new sets.
Did you get a floor model?

If this was $1,100 with extended warrenty i would be kicking myself for paying $888.50 for my 37w3 w/ 2 yr warrenty from costco. I still will probably check my bestbuy anyway. Its probably another $300 for an extended warrenty lol.

"Extended Warranty" - you mean the Best Buy PSP? If you purchased the PSP for a display, get your money back.
I've said it a thousand times: Service Plans are useless. Completely. Under no circumstances should you purchase a service plan for any product you buy. Make sure to buy a product with a reputable manufacturer's name on the front, and you'll be all set.
My opinion, of course, but after hassling with a few retailers over service plans, I've stopped handing over my cash for nothing in return. Service plans are a ridiculous way to pad the bottom line, and retailers should be barred from being in the insurance business anyway.
I printed this out, and am going down to my local to see if they will price match.

I think most prices matches are done with actual store ads from newpapers or circulars, not forums where anyone can say anything.
So far I've called 3 BB to see if they had either the 47 or the 42 in stock and what thier prices are, but not a single one even answered the phone.

Can't we predict the results? d94 got in on a sale and schemed :) some discounts. The display was already heavily discounted. I doubt that any BB will be eager to match this random Internet price.
