hi currently i own a type of dvd player where the speakers have 2 leads negative and positive and you have to hook them up to the dvd player with no connector you have to plug each lead in the negative and positive on the back of the dvd player

so basically i want to buy an oppo dvd player but the connectors of the back of it for the speakers are the following

Well the DVD player you currently have actually includes an amp, but the one you linked to doesnt have one, so you would need a seperate amp, such as a home theater reciever to power your speakers.

dam that would mean an extra 500 bucks on top of the 200 bucks on the dvd player

may i ask why wouldint i higher end dvd player not have an included amp as an option

because only lower end components have amps in the *usually*

high quality stuff for home theater does not come in a combination box.

What others have said is right on, thought you don;t NEED to spend 500 bucks on an amp. What do you have for speakers, 2.1? 5.1?

i have a 5.1 speaker system im ganan upgrade my old ones with the ones for listening to music and such they are much better speakers and are massive

basssicly i want to connect dvd player to reciever using hdmi and connect reciver with hdmi to tv with dvi ( hdmi to dvi , for reciever to tv)

would i need a upconverting downconverting receiver or is this a good setup for anytype of reciever that has hdmi

Bypass the reciever and have the HDMI go strait to the TV, so you dont have to spend so much on the receiver. A really nice one, like a Yamaha you can pick up for 150-200, and it will do everything you will ever need. :P

oh yea that would be smart and then whenever i want to watch a movie i would just open the receiver and set it to dvd player mode so basically the receiver is just used for audio

im just wondering why do people have everything running through their receiver then, seeing that most hdtv's have an assortment of connectors

A) they have a very high end reciever that does allow everything to be put through, or B) they dont ;) they just use macros to toggle everything to each command.

no, just one or the other. You're not going to get 5.1 audio over a L/R RCA cable though.

what do you mean? and why wouldint it work isint that how you hook them up usisng the rca from reciever to the dvd player to each channel front left right. sorruund left right , center and sub

or is 5.1 audio only carried through optical connections since they are digital?

Oh, I'm sorry, I blanked out when reading that diagram. Yes, you can get 5.1 over that combination of rcas, as long as the dvd player can output that.

Ahh, sorry about the late reply ;)

Really it doesnt matter, some might say that one is better then the other. I prefer optical, to me it sounds a bit more clean on the top end, where coax is more clean in the bottom end. That and Coax is a bit more durable of a cable then optical. But it comes down to what stuff uses what. Some DVD players only have optical, and most next gen consoles only have optical. Either way, I much more prefer digital connection then the 6ch direct connection, that way you have alot more choices for surround sound setups and profiles. :D
