View Full Version : Friend's new widescreen monitor - resolution problems
You may have seen from my other thread that I got 2 new monitors today, well, a friend was with me and he decided to hop on the bandwagon and get one too. His was different, however - I got LG Flatrons and he got some one by a brand named 'Cibox' - a budget one.
Anyhow, he got it home and plugged it in, tried to set the resolution (it needs 1680x1050 it's a 16:10 22") but the option doesn't show up, it goes straight from 1280x1024 to 1600x1200. He's on XP Home SP2, it's an ANCIENT graphics card - there are two of them, one for 2D and one for 3D I think. I have tried uninstalling the driver and restarting, but that does nothing. As far as we're aware it didn't come with a driver; there was 1 CD but it was a manual.
Can anyone suggest how we might set this to the right resolution?
Their site, here:
http://www.ciboxcorp.com/web/english/products/Monitor/C2201-e.htm#C2201
Does not list a driver for any of their monitors.
I meant for the the graphic card

If it's an ancient graphics card it's possible, and likely, that the card simply does not support widescreen resolutions.

qft. For it to hace a seperate card for 2d, this must be a REALLY old machine. How old are we talking here?
It's very strange, it's a bit of a Frankenstein's monster inside. I think it's an Athlon 1400+ with 512MB DDR333, a ~20GB hard disc and those ancient graphics cards.
If he were to get an AGP 8x FX5200 and stick it in his AGP slot, if the AGP slot were slower than 8x would it still work, albeit at the lower speed?

Separate cards for 2D/3D reminds me of back in the days of Pentiums, 3DFX cards, and Win3.1...
You could try forcing the resolution, but if its really that ancient, more then likely the card wont support it at all.

Yeah, the card should probably also be compatible with 4x

I remember building my first all new system. It was a PII400, I forget how much RAM, 6.4Gig harddrive, ATI All in wonder, and a Voodoo 2 card for 3D :) Oh and the old creative DXR2 DVD decoder :)

Ah yes, the DXR2. I believe it was based off the Sigma Designs Hollywood+ card, which I still have, as well as a 3DFX card, and a RivaTNT. I think thats all around my 2nd and 3rd build/upgrade. Amazing that that old board and Pent still work. Too bad it too old to even use as a Smoothwall box as I wish to use it.
It's an ATI Rage Fury Pro 32MB with some other 2D card. I got the latest drivers for it (which are from 2001...) and it still had the same resolution choices. I've told him he'll need to get a new card.

Ya I had a Rage Pro in my old P3 that I gave to a friend. He bought a new WS LCD and has the same prob. He's now saving for a new budget gaming system.

Isnt the Fury Pro a 2D/3D card? I think I have one of those that I use just for testing boards.

Actually yes that makes sense *duh*, I played 3D games on my old P3 :P
It definitely has 2 cards in it, they are linked by a cable that runs outside the back of the machine. It's a cable with 3 connectors on it, in the same way an IDE lead has - one connected to the first card, one connected to the second and one for the monitor. When you look in DXDiag it says something like Display adapter: ATI Rage Fury Pro 3D / ATI Something 2D.

Probably more like jivetrky's setup then with the ATI + Voodoo. Never did that myself
Hi I also had a similar problem and it was hard to find a solution. Finally I found the answer in a great tech support site that had free live chat support and guaranteed solutions. I am sure you will find some answers there.
Good luck
