this article might be slightly old (a few days already :p ) but I think some of you might be interested!

Ready to HD: Performance of Contemporary Graphics Accelerators during Video Playback (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/video-playback.html)

as I've said before, you do not need a highend video card for HD content! in fact, they all pretty much (or very close) the same! the only time you want to put a highend card in your HTPC is IF you plan to also play PC game on your HDTV (trust me, play game on a 50+" HDTV is totally another level!!). otherwise, it's a waste of $ and will certain heating things up a lot more!

pay attention to different level card's preformance for the same content. they are almost the same across the broad!

also, I'm sure if they play with nVidia's noise reduction and sharpening slider, the picture quality will be better or as good as ATI's too.

(when I finish building a bedroom theater, I'll just get a basic card for the room's HTPC, which itself is pretty much a barebone too, as it's just a client anyway)

IMO a HTPC doesnt necessarly need a super powerfull gfx card (as stated....) but it needs a decent cpu for the BEST possible quality. A good cpu will allow the use of postprocessing programs like dscaler or ffdshow to truely enhance the image.

This is very intersting. I guess my 7600gts will be at home in my htpc very soon. Too bad it isn't hdcp, but according to that article, there is already a way to circumvent that.

my FX5500 does well at 1080i, i guess i should be thinking of an upgrade anyways to at least a 7 series or a x1 series.

I have a 6200 in both of mine which plays any HD content perfectly well. I don't even have very powerful CPUs behind them (1.6GHz P-M and 2.53GHz P4).
