View Full Version : Wooooot sauce! 37" Westy in krag's hizouse!
Dadgum! I love being me!! I got my 37" Westinghouse today and I am blown away! Good thing I have a Quad with 2 x 8800-GTX in SLI! :bday: It is true 1080P with a rez of 1920x1080 at 60Hz on 8Ms response time. I have played some HL2 on it with spectacular results. No tearing or ghosting. I love this LCD. looks like the ole 2405fpw is going to the classies.!!

How does it look snice you sit so close. Its on sale at newegg for under 1000$
Sitting close make it look a bit pixel-ated. I am gonna fix that by reworking my deck. I will have to take the top half and nail it to the wall about 18 inches up the wall so I can push the LCD to the back of the desk

That makes the 27" Dell monitor seem like a bit of a waste.
My only question is how many games have that resolution standard without having to do some widescreen hacks? (assuming they have widescreen resolutions at all)

I've got one also, bought it at Conn's in Houston for $1082 after tax. Great looking monitor I use it on a daily basis for hours. Definately the best bang for the buck.

I think I know what I'll be spending my tax return on...
It was going to be ATIs DX10 card but from the looks of it I might get next years taxes before then...
Thanks for the heads up. I'd love to see something this big and expensive in person before I order it online though. Do Best Buy or any of the other major electronics dealers carry these in stock?

I know that bestbuy does not. They carry the non 1080p 37w2 and not the 37w3, which is what krag got.

HoooooSH! They want $1499 before shipping. Looks like newegg is the place to get it.
The rez is actually easier to push than the 1920x1200 of my Dell 24" and the widescreen hacks aren't really that big a deal. All the new games have now have wide screen resolutions.
looks Amazing Krag - as always your setup makes me both drool and weep at the same time :D

Yes but I haven't seen one with a 16:9 ratio <- *edit* nevermind, there are some! So you pretty much have to do a WS hack for most games? Not a huge deal I suppose..

Your 7900gs can drive games @ that high a res ?
Friend has that 37" and I have an older 27" westinghouse. We're both very pleased with our purchases. (mine is 18 months old, his many months but less than a year)
I've played some xbox 360 on the 37" and it's a very good monitor. DVDs and HD DVDs look great. I did some gaming on the 27" but at 16ms there was enough tearing that I wouldn't say it's an ideal solution, but acceptible. the 27" is used as HT monitor and works well for dvds and television. I paid $750 for the 27" so $1250 for a 4 year warranty on the 37" is a sweet deal.
Could you do me a favor and measure the actual width of the entire unit? I was thinking of getting one but haven't had time to stop at Best Buy to get the measurements (I don't need/want a new entertainment center... couldn't afford the additional cost anyway).
Pinky, the actual width from side to side is 37 1/4" with the inside viewable screen at 32". When I got the 24" about a year ago I thought, "man, I won't need to upgrade my monitor for a looong time." Welp, we know that wasn't true...heh! Hopefully, this upgrade will last longer.
Krag, thanks a bunch :). Now to measure the entertainment center when I get home tonight, then start saving...

I purchased my 37w3 at Best Buy in October. It's possible that they're not getting a restock, due to the upcoming 42-, 47- and 52-inch models.

Grats Krag on a bad@ss LCD!!
I've been so tempted to hook my PC upto my 60" Sony i stole from Santa but can't bring myself to do it with my current Rig. I'm patiently waiting for my upgrade in April then see how it looks with some C2D luvin'.
I would love to browse OCF on that beast!
The current entertainment center is too small.
Maybe I can convince the girlfriend to buy a larger one if I agree to buy the new TV :D.
You remind me of the guy from Pure Pwnage who had the MASSIVE LCD screen in the one LAN party. That's SO AWESOME!

Actually... it runs 1080p just fine with my MATROX PCI... but I can't do anything with it at that res, I can just enjoy my Bloat-Free install of Windows NT showing a few windows, and play an MP3(92kbps!!1!). And when I move a window around, it lags like hell!
The P-I, now that has some real power! I can play Sim City 2000 in 1080p! it's the only game that I can get to run at that res without lagging horribly, But it's sole purpose is to act as my On-Demand MP3 server for my home network.
I was about to get the same 37" Westy myself, but this thing was a steal, $1300CDN.
Ok, some decent pics of the new screen. So far, its love at first sight.

Welcome to the 1080p widescreen TV club :)
Though I don't have the westy (Aquos here), I can appreciate how nice it is to have a big ass high res monitor. It's been a few months and it's still sinking in every time I sit down and smile hehe.
I have mine wall mounted with the desk back a bit, I sit about 6' from the TV and it's perfect :)
Super nice setup Daleon. Where did you buy your LCD?

However 37" is just too big, I find it difficult to stare at my 27" for several hours in a row...

Well this has gotten me to thinking hard about one of these. I've been searching for a ws for a while now, I even tried the Gateway 24" but didn't get a very good one and it seems as if every 24" monitor has one issue or another. Then I read about the Samsung 275T, the Samsung monitor using the 92% color gamut screen found in the Dell 27", which was supposed to be out in February for $999 but it's absolutely no where to be found. So I was ready to drop $1000 on a monitor, for both regular PC and movie watching, 27" would be better than 24" although sitting far back still wouldn't be quite right.
So then I see this! Same price and full HD although it loses some resolution. The only problem for me is it's a bit *too big, I looked at 37" TVs to see and they are pretty large :p A 32" would actually be the perfect size, but are there any 32" 1080p flat panel TVs? I couldn't find any.
Also could you guys with this TV do me a favor and take some screenshots, especially Krag because you have a 16:10 monitor as well. I play RTS type games mostly which usually have a UI at the bottom. My only concern would be that losing 10% of the vertical resolution would restrict game view too much. Krag, if you have any RTS that you can run at both 1920x1080 and by 1200 could you take screenshots from identical game poisitions so I can see how much is lost?
Got mine from Egg. Defintely want to wall mount mine soon, should be perfect then.
Nice setup Voodoo. I had a 27" for a long time so I'm use to the large size screens and its really no problem for me at all. I can't believe how much better WoW looks on this thing. The color is gorgeous, detail is insane. Its so big that my entire field of vision is taken up and its very immersive. The windows realestate is nice to, have to adjust though to the size a little more in windows.
Mad, another alternative might be dual monitor. I closely considered getting a cpl 2407 or 2007's or similar instead of one big screen. Along with a matrox dual head adapter they can make for a great gaming setup.

Actually it was my previous rig with the x850xt running it at that res. I play dod:s and fear. Dod was really smooth with eye candy but fear was a bit tougher.
Oh and by the way. I got mine for $750. Shopko had it the day after thanksgiving for 800 bucks and my cousin worked there so he got his discount which brought it down to about 700 and then 7% tax. DAMN good deal.

True, there are a few potential issues with dual monitors though. First off, the much larger resolution could probably kill an 8800GTX, and I 'only' have a GTS atm. Wierdness with the monitor spanning is another, plus having the monitor surrounds in the middle would be :( And as a regular media monitor they would be smaller.
Is this thing really going EOL because of the larger models as some have suggested? If so it may be necessary to get the perfect timing, once it hits EOL pricing but doesn't actually go out of stock.
Wish I could have gotten it for $800 on Black Friday though!

re-read my statement. "HDTV"! there's none native 1080p HDTV (regardless LCD or Plasma or whatever) on the market today, and will not be for a forseeable future.
oh the other hand, yes, there is some 2560x1600 30" LCD MONITOR. one of the main difference between PC monitor and HDTV is price as we all notice, and the purpose.

If OLED catches on, which it prob wont for awhile if at all due to the issues with blue, then we might see 1080p HDTV's that are sub 37" because OLEDs can be stacked on top of each other. I belive Sony had a 27"* OLED HDTV at CES that was 1080p. But yes you cannot buy a 1080p that is under 37" currently for any reasonable ammount.
*it might have been a different size but it was somewhere around there and was deff under 32"

Krag,
Geez, I'm impressed with your SLI and TV.
When I built this computer I purposely stayed away from a high end video card, not so much for the cost, but because I knew the games and great graphics can be addicting.
Since this thread just was posted:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=502731
and being referred to this thread for some graphics and HDTV education, it really makes me want to look into this more. I have a decent Sony 40" HDTV and my curiosity is really beginning to perk.
You guys shouldn't post photos like you do, it may cost me a lot of money! :D Great photos and setup.

For those who have this, how is this for desktop work? I'm sure it's fine for games and movies but what about the text sharpness, assuming you don't sit stupidly close - should probably sit at least 3 fett away from this badboy.
The text is O.K. not spectacular. I actually checked in here just before I downloaded the Windows XP-Power Toy text sharpener tool.

Better, worse, or about the same as the Dell? Given apprpriate viewing distances for both of course. Did that text-sharpening powertoy do any good?
Yes, the clear type helped. The differences are minimal both are excellent displays its hard to tell the image quality apart from 2 very good LCDs.
