Hello, I am looking for a 20.1" monitor.

I have looked at the Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP as I have heard a lot about this, but it seems that it has a poor response time.

I have looked at the Viewsonic VX2025 which has a better response time.

I have also looked at many other monitors and it seems very confusing about which one to buy.

I am very unsure about which one to buy, what one would you guys recommend (doesn't have to be from the list above).

Requirements:
Needs to be 20.1"
1680 x 1050 Resolution

It will be used for gaming and watching movies.

Thanks

Looks like a good monitor, but I have been reading up a lot lately and the 2007WFP looks great, I will probably go with that.

Only problem is with the issue of banding due to the revision of the monitor, and I have read that the A02 is the one to go for.

That has been fixed snice A03 but now dell is even shipping A04 models.

With the A03, I heard they use another type on display panel which isn't as good as the A02s.

What has been changed on the A04 models?

That monitor doesn't have a 1680x1050 resolution. It's not even widescreen.

Hardin,

You're right, punched in the wrong one:

I've seen this one and used it.

That monitor is dithered...its cheap, but preferable IMHO to spend a bit extra for a true 8 bit panel.

Wouldn't it be more constructive to make a suggestion for the guy rather than to put down my opinion? (IMHO) :)

There seems to be a lot of panels with very good specs, but its still confusing to decide which one to buy. I have heard that some companies take shortcuts in making the panels and therefore they are not as good as some.

What companies are the best to buy from?

Thanks

If you are looking for 1680x1050 you need to be looking at a 22" 16:10.

I just got this one and for the money it is simply AWSOME!

It takes a good bit of adjustment to get the backlight to work with you though. I have found to set the contrast about 50% and the brightness at abou 25% then raise the brightness with you GFX drivers and it will eliminate the backlight prob.

Andy,

That's the biggest problem, you don't know who's building what and how. The best way is to get "hands on" ownership suggestions like the post above from Immortal Hero.

I agree, its just that I don't want to splash out a lot of money on a monitor that isn't good. I rang up dell and managed to talk the guy down to £250 for the monitor. But I'm just worried that I might get a defective version. Also with the 2007, it seems that it has a bad responce time (16ms), so will it be good for gaming?

I probably want to steer clear of dell atm because I seems a bit hit and miss and IMO with this amount of money that I am going to be spending I don't want to waste it.

Well this is the monitor that I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824112176 It has good brightness and contrast and it says it's 16.7 million colors but they seem to have a new one with a 5ms response time http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824112003

So basically, any monitor is good if the specifications are good and it is from a realiable manufacturer?

I suppose. I like this monitor but I wish it was glossy like laptop monitors(I like that kind of thing) the only weird thing about it is that it had a dead pixel but it went away. It was really strange when I noticed it was gone.

I know in 22" 16:10's there are only 2 or 3 pannels made and they are just slapped in different displays. I know the pannel in mine is the best rated 22" but I don't remember the name of it. This is prob the case with most of them.

Things to look for:

Low response time <= 8ms
Good contrast ratio >= 800:1

These are the two most important things IMO.

His original choices were superior to the one you listed.

IMHO the Dell is the best option if you can afford it.

All 22inch LCDs use TN panels which are not 16.7 million colors. They also have poor viewing angels and average color reproduction.

Yes...I myself have a...less than favorable view on the 22's ;)...but I keep it to myself. :D

I have been looking at different panels, and it seems that the Dell one is probably the best shot, even if I have to go through the agro of returning it multiple times to get the correct version. Is it true that they give you a refurb as a replacement?

What size of panel would you recommend then which doesn't use a TN panel?

After much research I have come to the conclusion that I am going to get the Dell 2007WFP. Only problem is the version. What version is the best? I rang up Dell and they said they will give me a A03, but I heard thats a PVA panel and the A04 is a S-IPS.

But theres not many A04s around, when do you think they will become more available? I can wait, I do not have to buy soon.

I took the plunge and bought a 2007WFP. The woman on the phone said it would be a A04, so lets hope that it is. I will make a small review on it later- with all the tests to see if there are banding issues etc.
