I am interested in turning a shuttle into a video upscaler, is there any reasonably cheap or free software that would produce better results than FFDshow for post processing?

Shuttle is an Opty 165 with 1GB DDR 333, I haven't set it up yet as I haven't bought the HDTV. I was just wondering whether there are better post processing tools avaliable for the job.

Not sure if there is or not, alot of people rave about FFDshow tho. I'll look around tomorrow at a few of the HTPC sites I got to and see if I can find anything out for you.
Edit just did a google search and the first 4 pages were for ffdshow and purevideo.

ffdshow and nvidia purevideo are the best I've found. I upscale to 1920 x 1080 and very pleased with either. On setup google is the place to go you'll find more than you'll need.

that setup will make a perfect upscaler.... i jsut bought a e4300 and mobo for my htpc so it would have enough horsepower to upscale a dvd better... upscalling the dvd 3 times from original (2160x1440) using ffdshow + purevideo and Media Player Classic yeilds only a 40% cpu usage spread across BOTH CORES! so ffdshow (says media player classic is using cpu but ffdshow is the reason) is multi threaded so ur 165 should have no prob... i will be doing a tutorial of my own on how to setup ffdshow and purevideo to produce some AWSOME picture. so stick around.

i am having a hard time getting the picture quality up to my standards on my HTPC...is the FFDShow option in media portal(or any frontend) what i need to configure this?
the setup goes like this
sat receiver-SVID-pvr150mce-ati x300 128mb-dvi/hdmi cable-sony wega 42" LCD
the picture this way is very blocky and just nasty

Hey nd4spdbh2,
If you create a new thread for your guide, would you mind posting a link in this thread? That would rock out! I also have a Shuttle that would work well for this type application.

I'm definitely looking forward to that guide! Once that's out, I'm sure your shuttle will be plenty powerful enough to produce some awesome results.

Would ahving a link in here really help. I mean your post would be on page 1 of the HTPC area. If it had the word guide in it I have a feeling most would see and read it.

I've heard that before hahah, j/k man.
I'm waiting for it too, I've messed around with ffd and am not really impressed. I don't see much improvement over just purevideo. I'm just figuring I'm doing something wrong.

I know this is reviving a dead thread or something, but I am still waiting for the guide if you're still willing to finish it.

I'm running Vista, ASUS A7N8X-X, Barton 2400+ (oc'd to ~2ghz), 1ghz RAM, ATI X1300, DVI -> HDMI to a Olevia 227v.
I have ffdshow installed but I have no idea how to adjust anything. All I know is that I'm getting "meh" quality.

here's one, latest/up_to_date, guide that you guy could try.

also, avsforum has another setup guide in the htpc section too. htpcnews.com used to have a pretty good beginner guide, but the site has been down for months and doesn't look like they will be back tho.
