I got a Radeon X700 PRO with a C2D E6300 @ 2.8ghz with 1gb of ram.

Since I finally built my own computer, I wanted to try the HD-DVD playback using the external xbox 360 drive. I got 2 trial programs, PowerDVD 7 and WinDVD 8. In powerdvd, it reads the disc, but the display output is all garbled and artifacts like crazy, sound is fine. Windvd finds the drive, but does not load the disc with no error messages. I restarted my computer and lowered my gpu clocks, but still the same issue. Atitool shows no artifacts when testing, at stock and underclocked speeds.

Could it be the HDCP is oddly interfering/glitching out? I connected my monitor through the analog (VGA) port.

is the video card HDCP, if it's not than you can forget about paying HD DVD's

Nope, its not HDCP compatable. Although I heard that if you connect to the display to vga, it will work without HDCP or at most, have the resolution reduced.

it should down force the resolution. If you are connected via vga due to the fact that hdcp can only authenticate via dvi or hdmi if you computer has hdcp on both sides of the port which you dont have. If you do want to run at full res then there are some things you can do to cercomvent hdcp but we really cant talk about them here.
