I have an x850xt. THe product support page says that I should be able to dual monitor output but with one dvi-i and the other VGA. Since both would be analog, would it make any picture quality difference?

Also, maybe I am reading this wrong, but I should be able to have a larger resolution over the monitors right? Or will I just be broadcasting the same image to both monitors (in which case I will wait for a video card upgrade.)

Usually DVI will have better quality, if running in DVI-D, not I. If you were to have 2x LCDs at 1280x1024 res each, the overall resolution will become 2560x1024. Just set it to use extended desktop.

you can have differing resolutions as well. for instance, i run a primary at 1680x1050 and a secondary at 1280x1024. you can make them clone, span or extend and you can mess with behavior on one display over another.
also, you wont notice a real difference if you are running two analogs. the quality through a signal switcher will degrade a little, but not really much you will notice unless you are looking for problems.
Having pure dvi and analog side by side can be a little painful though. try not to mix them up if at all possible and you wont be missing anything =) todays analog is rather good.

well if I had a dual setup it would be dvi-i and vga. I just didn't know if the card can support 2560 x 1024. Right now I have my res at 1280x1024 and like it, but would I need to lose this ratio of res for a duak display (i.e. have to lower the res on both screens?)

Nope, you dont have to reduce the rezolutiom to have a second screen, you can pump both at full rez, no problem, I have a 7900gt runing two 17" tft's, both at 1280x1024, works great, the extra real-estate comes in handy!

*edit*

Second vote for Ultramon! brilliant application for two or more screens.

ultramon user here also.

Maybe we should just make something like this a sticky...

Subject: Things you'll need for dual display

Message:
Get Ultramon and read the stickies.

lol, no disrespect to anyone who asks about dual displays. It's a lot of money to invest if you don't know what you're doing... but it's gotten so easy now to do I trust you can all figure it out without much help along the way... especially if you have ultramon right out of the gate.
