VLC and a whole lot of fiddling and you can get most movies to display properly. Some of them just never seem to work right though.

Are these 4:3 movies you want to force 16:9? Or letterboxed 16:9? (or 1.85:1 or 2.35?)

letterboxed.

I have this massive display and still getting those black borders on top and bottom is annoying.

4:3 I know I cant do anything about..

If you have black bars on the top and bottom of a 16:9 screen, then you're not displaying 4:3 video - that's got to be 1.85 (tiny black bars) or 2.35 (much larger black bars). 4:3 would leave black bars on the left and right.

Can't speak for your TV, but mine allows for 16:9, 4:3, and two zoom levels. Each of those zoom levels allow for what you're requesting. Might want to check and see if yours has that option.
