I am rebuilding my HTPC and am in search of a good power supply.

Specs:
Athlon 3200+
Asus A8R-MVP
X1300Pro
2x512 Kingston Valueram
2x Ati Theater 550
80GB Sata
200GB Pata
Memory Card Reader

I don't want more power than I need since heat and sound are a concern. I'm wondering if a 300-350w PSU would be enough or if I need to start looking at 400w units.

I was looking at these:

Actually getting more power then you need means the psu will not have to strain to power the system. So if its has thermal controlled fans for cooling then they will never kick on :)

Fortrons are great but noisy in my limited experience.

Smartpower works GREAT for 6 months then starts screeching. (common problem apparently).

Sunbeams can be had for under 70 bucks, and are totally silent on my rig (4600 4x512MB of ram DVDRW 6 hdds and 3 120mm case fans 1 10" CC lights and 1 80 mm fan 7600 gs.

never gets over 25C :)

I would highly recommend Seasonic PSU. used two on my HTPC (previous one and current), as quiet as one can get while still producing enough juice and not much heat!

QFT... SEASONIC FTW... i have one in my rig in my sig (he he that rhymes) and the fan NEVER spins faster than the slowest it can go, even with a c2d clocked at 4ghz and a 8800gts  ... pluss the thing is utterly quiet... its an amazing psu.

I looked at Seasonic, they sound like they would be really good but the price is a little high. I was looking to spend less than $50. I have been looking a little more and found a couple Silverstones that look nice.

SILVERSTONE SST-ST365

SILVERSTONE SST-ST405 (I could probably handle the extra $8 shipping)

I also saw an OCZ Modstream 450w in the classifieds that I am inquiring about.

unfortunately, that's just not realistic for a quality, silent psu. you should budget closer to $70. you might want to take a look at this list of recommended power supplies:

I found the Seasonic S12-330 (http://www.case-mod.com/store/seasonic-s12330-s12-series-330w-330-watt-pcie-power-supply-sleeved-p-1576.html?src=fr) in my price range at case-mod.com, so I went ahead and ordered it.

my PSU in my HTPC is quite interesting to me.

its my old antec blue 420W i think, its silent and it hanldes 5 HDD's a dvd rom, a little OC on cpu, plus graphics + sound and its like 5 years old, tbh i thought it would fail when i plugged in the latest 2*320gb, but it didnt and i leave this thing on for 3 months at a time.

kick ass little unit, not the best for high end OC'ing but. So you probably can find good PSU's for 50$ easily for your HTPC if your not ocing it to far..
