View Full Version : help me convert VHS to DVD
I've been asked to convert some old VHS family home videos to DVD format. I don't have a clue. I have a simple little HTPC with a DVD burner and TV tuner card. I'm assuming that I can capture the analog signal from the VHS player with the hardware I have (at least I think maybe I can), but what software is required to convert this to a DVD format that I can burn (MPEG-2 I'm guessing?). Preferably something simple and very cheap. I suppose the converted file will need to be initially saved to the harddrive, right? Pretend I know nothing, which is close to the truth. Thanks.

www.dvdrhelp.com may have something.
Thanks for the links. I had already previously read Klown's first link. His second link mentioned Ulead DVD MovieFactory software which seemed fairly easy to use. I decided to research my Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP Deluxe card to make sure I could hook up a VCR to it. By golly, it came bundled with DVD MovieFactory 2.5 for capturing and Cool 3D for Video Editing (and also VideoStudio which I guess is authoring software). So, supposedly I have everything I need already.
I did a test video capture from VHS to mpeg-2 and it worked. Yippee!

or you can visit and try VHS to DVD (http://www.vhs-to-dvd.com/vhs-to-dvd.html) and copy your home video tapes to dvd. You can get a pretty good conversion at a reasonable price from a lot of places. But what are most of these companies lacking? Care and attention to detail! Other ways you get totally amateurish product done with domestic equipment.

I got it to work, thanks. My setup is doing pretty good I think.
