View Full Version : Just bought Westy 37" 1080P, going to use as monitor
As the title says I just bought my westy 37" :santa: and i'll be recieving it in 7-10 days. I have some questions about gaming on my current rig with this new LCD..
Wondering if my rig can handle it, currently using an X700 256MB ati radeon, it has a DVI port for the monitor. 1.7GB of ram at 333MHZ amd athlon 64 3200+.
I know my video card can handle it's native resolution of 1920 x 1080 but I doubt it's going to be very playable for games. I want to upgrade my rig, but I have $300 in total to spend. What would I see a benefit from more, a video card/dual core opt 170, or just a better video card?
remember I have $300 to spend, thanks for any information you might have :D

I can't really help with your question, but I game on this monitor an absolutely love it.
What resolution do you currently run at? 1920x1080 is cumulatively ~58% more pixels than 1280x1024, and ~8% more pixels than 1600x1200.
I'd say the bottleneck in your setup is the processor, so look there to upgrade.

The processor should do you well, but that graphics card just won't do. The whole x16** series is underpowered... you'll need something more than that to do 1920x1080 is gaming. Do you really have pci-e x16, or is it AGP? If the former, then you'll be able to find some good stuff for around $200 give or take (AGP is nearly dead, and now is overpriced).

I have a PCI-E x 16 slot, what video card would you recommend?
on a side note, has any ever heard of plasmabay.com and if they're a reliable store shipping wise?
Thanks again!

x1900Xt 512MB can be found on Ebay for under 300 usually.
Clock that CPU up to 2.4GHz... it will make a nice peromance boost.
Your ram... is it all DDR333? If you are mixing DDR400 and ### then pull the 33 and run at 400. Nice differnce there also. (plus running dual channel should make a nice perf boost as well. (If you dont have 2x512MB of PC3200 try selling off your ram and grabbing a set )
You will be better off running 1GB of DDR400 in dual channel then you would with an odd amount like 1.7GB in single channel and slower speeds

Alright, well that CPU upgrade, as cool as it is to say you got an FX and it is faster....your still single core and not much better off than a 3200+.
I would find a 7900GT or X1900XT (usualy a tad more) and a used opty 165 or 3200+ X2 to get dual core (the majority of games do not use the dual core but that will be changing soon. Also what ram sticks do you have to get 1.7gb? like Nuer said try to get that up to 400mhz as long as you don't drop below 1gb.
just get a better vid. card, like one of those mentioned above. if you can overclock your cpu, go for it.
make sure you calibrate the monitor to get the best colors. it can look like any of the high-end stuff easily, just takes a half an hour of fiddling with it. dvd's like starwars, for example, come with their own calibration section.
And :welcome: to the OC forums Oak!
