View Full Version : crt->lcd-> Monster CRT!
I went from a 19inch nec crt from around 2003 until recently I purchased a 19inch samsung 940bx (back in oct) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001080 which was a great little lcd but it was just missing something so I sold it to my buddy about 3 weeks later and have been using his 21 inch mitsubishi crt and although I miss the coolness factor of the lcd I really felt like it was performing better while gaming and lcd's still need to improve to match a crt (not saying they aren't great because I do agree they are)
Well I was looking at the Sceptre, Samsung and Chimei 22 inch wide screens knowing I wanted a wide screen.I intended on purchasing one of those 3 this week. Well I saw a post earlier today which had this monitor in it and it made my jaw drop... a 24inch crt weighing in at a healthy 109lbs lol and it's Wide screen. Being out of the loop for quite some time and disregarding such things which were in excess of 1,500 , I was quite suprised and very interested. Needless to say I purchased it..
What Monitor and How much you ask ?

No DVI?
Nope unfortunely not :( but the thing about it is I have never used dvi except for about 3 weeks when I had my lcd, but like I said it felt like it was missing something and games just flow better on any of the crt's I've used. Since I game about 90% of the time I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't have bought it heh.

She looks like a beauty! I just got a 22" lcd on BF and it just doesn't match a CRT. I'm gonna go back to a CRT probably in a couple years. Enjoy your amazing PQ and responsiveness!!!!!

Ya I picked up the 22inch westinghouse on BF for a x-mas gift. Is that the same one you got? How was the picture/bleed if so?
And Thank you :) I can't wait I am going to pick it up Friday.
nice monitor. i'd go back to crt in a second if i had the space.

Yea, that's the one. Everything seems like its fuzzy compared to my CRT. The picture is OK and the bleed is almost minimal. Everything just seems like its fake if that makes any sense. It is worth the $200 though, that's for sure. Don't waste your money on a DVI cable, there is no difference in PQ.

Maybe not at 1680 x 1050, but at 1920 x 1200 on my 24", i definatley notice a big difference with vga vs. dvi.
Even if I used DVI though since the monitor doesn't support a digital signal. It would be through an adapter which would just be dvi-a (analog signal) and to be honest I'd get better quality without an adapter. If the monitor supported digital then it would be a different story. But all a DVI hook up would be is just a plug with no performance gain.
Currently my card is 1 vga 1 dvi.. but the one I'm ordering is dual dvi :( so I hope the adapter it comes with is good quality.

Great buy, but I wonder how much it sticks out in the back? My 19inch already barely fits in my (decent size) computer desk.
Actually after getting it I found it to be very small for a 24" inch depth wise it's no bigger than my old 21" diamondpro 2070sb infact it might even be smaller. It's also only about 80lbs. The weight was listed with a box.But I can tell you it's very heavy at the front which makes it awkward to carry.
It's quite the deal and I'm really loving it. I'd recommend it to anybody as a primary gaming monitor!
edit:
Height 19.7 in.
Width 22.54 in.
Depth 20.61 in.
Weight 92.61 lb.
No DVI?
CRTs are Analog so VGA works best with them, DVI would make no difference at all, LCDs have to convert VGA to Digital which is why it doesn't look as good vs. DVI.
Congrats on the GDM-FW900 :) , Mine is 5 years old and still puts any LCDs to shame that ive sat next to it (clone mode) , I notice the same thing about the "fuzziness" especially when comparing photo's on both, CRT has a more natural "looking through a window" quality while LCD is overbright / oversaturated and "Fake" when comparing.
Anyhow here's how it compares to a 22" Mitsubishi size wise: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1028726815&postcount=919

Kbanny,
I hear what you're saying. I'm sitting here with an old MAG 17 CRT and have been contemplating an LCD for some time. I'm just not sure I'll be as pleased with an LCD.
Have seen a few, my son has a Dell 1907fp and it's very nice but it's just not "there" yet. I have yet to see a higher end LCD physically to see if they are worth paying more for (NEC for instance). Not every store has a large inventory of various LCD brands to look at.
Unfortunately buying a larger CRT for me (19-21") by mail kills any savings with shipping and you need a forklift to move it! So I am looking locally so I can do what you did: go pick it up myself. I have all the room I need to place a 19-21" CRT.
It's the same with TVs, the larger 34" CRTs are 200 lbs but $500 and the 32 - 37 LCDs are twice to three times that but 50 lbs.
