Ok someone help me decide. I've read multiple things about DLP and Plasma but I keep thinking DLP for some reason except I found a truly great out of box item in a Plasma for $1899. I do want a big tv maybe bigger than 56" but I also want the best possible picture. Also I have a big den and will be sitting about 12.5 ft from the TV.
Someone help me decide please.

If I were you I'd get a projector and and 100"+ screen especially if your den is dark.
My suggestion: Pany PT-AE900U (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824187076) and Elite 100" screen (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824999102)

nice thought but a projectors not going to be possible because of the windows in the den and it'd be best if I stick with a TV

i have viewed that samsung 56 inch television
amazing resolution
but at 2700.00 dollars u.s.
that is a rip-off
you can get that same t.v. up in costco in canada
for 2199.99 canadian and that includes the stand free
try costco.com
and see if they have the same deals down there
Both the plasma and the DLP can be had for under $2000. I'm in the same situation, get the slightly smaller plasma with less resolution or the larger DLP with more resolution for the same price.
I think I'll probably get the plasma. It's thinner (I might go for a wall mount), plasma doesn't seem to have the strange lag issues that many DLPs have with games, and I won't ever have to worry about replacing an expensive lamp.
720p vs 1080p difference isn't huge in my opinion on these sizes of TV's.
Still haven't totally made up my mind yet. I might just wait to see what 2007 brings.

I'd get the DLP. Plasma's will burnt out unpredicably, and when they die they are done, no repairs can be made. I'd be especially wary about that out-of-box one, who knows how many hours are on it already. Plus the heat output and power draw of the plasma is rediculous.

Plus to Plasma's still burn in as easilly as they used too? Like the above poster said when they die they are pretty much done.
Just build your own HDTV Projector like I did :) 1280x720, its no 1080p but at 120" who cares!

Burn in isnt nearly as bad as it was when plasmas first came out but its still always burning in teh back of your mind. I just opted for a 1080p lcd instead.

Burn-in is still a concern with plasma sets, but with the latest generation or two it's much less of an issue. You can't leave an image on there all day, it will burn in. But I game on my 42" plasma and it's not a problem.
Also, a plasma tv is good for thousands and thousands of hours of use. Yes, they will eventually die. Everything electronic does. But they can and should last for years. My brother in law has had a 50" plasma for 5+ years now and it's still flawless. No bulbs to change, or any such additional maintenance costs. The principle they operate on is very similar to that of a CRT, and I've had CRT televisions last 15 or 20 years. So a plasma should work for a nice long time.
Note that plasma panels are much like an LCD. You can have a single dead pixel, or a row of dead pixels, etc. It's not an all-or-nothing situation as with a CRT or DLP tv.
Myself, I wouldn't trade my plasma for a DLP. One reason is I'm sensitive to DLP sets exhibiting the "rainbow effect" from the spinning light wheel. I also love that my tv is mounted on the wall, saving space in the room. The contrast is much better than rear projection sets are capable of, or even LCD's for that matter. And it's great for gaming.
