View Full Version : does KVM lower image quality for monitor?

Does a monitor with a direction connection get better image quality than one on a KVM? If so, is it only the image quality that is affected or is there something else too? like refresh rates or something...?

Btw, the one I'm using is a Belkin.

The only time I have seen any kind of change in quality is when you use a spliter to go to two monitors. Never noticed any change when using a KVM.

Theoretically its possible that the signal could lose some strength I would guess as the KVM is a point of failure.

Have you noticed any issues with your belkin?

No I haven't noticed any issues as of yet. I'm mostly a gamer and I have a nice 19" CRT plugged into it. I guess I'll have to wait till my computer gets here before testing games on it.

Agreed. If it's a cheap KVM I can see problems. My 22" CRT didn't display high res or high refresh rates very well (jumpy, flickering) with a cheap cable, once I got a decent quality cable that all went away.

A KVM is just a switch. It directly connects the monitor to the selected computer. It's as if you plugged the monitor directly to the computer through a cable. I suppose it used a software switch internally (in which case anything is possible) or if it used lousy components then you might see a change, but a properly functioning KVM should affect the image one way or another.

I use an LCD display with my 4-port Belkin and I noticed a big difference when using the Belkin nickel-plated vs. the gold-plated connectors. The nickel-plated connectors show much more interference and flickering. As they say, go for the gold! :)
