View Full Version : Cleaning an XGA LCD screen safely? (Sony Vaio laptop)

Hello,
I'm fixing a friend's laptop computer (using DBAN to completely format the HDD, restore everything to factory defaults, etc.) and the screen is rather marked up.
I was curious if anyone has any experience in cleaning these screens? They look rather similar to a plasma screen, and I assume they have a thin film on the screen to protect it, as CRT HDTVs and other screens do.
So is the only safe way to clean it is to use a *little* bit of warm water on some micro-fiber cloth, or what's the safest way?
Thanks :)

Hopefully Articlear will be sold soon (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=468641&highlight=arcticlear). There's nothing better to clean LCD screens with, and they will ship it with a microfiber cloth.

SSS I remember the thread on that stuff. You heard anything else about it lately? I want to pick some up when it is available for my 2 LCD's and the couple Lappies I have.

Ok, I need this to be done by Monday (or Tuesday at the latest) as that's when I said I should be done with it. Monday I'm going in for a job interview at a place where I'd just do work some database/SQL, and some other computer-related stuff, so if I go in for the interview Monday, it may not be done until Tuesday. But either way, I'm just trying to find something simple.
This isn't your normal LCD, but the kind with the "shiney stuff" on it. :) I know with CRT and HDTVs, it is recommended to only use water.

Well, I just used a little water on a paper towel and it worked great. No scratches, no smudges, etc. These screens are rather easy to clean apparently compared to the regular non-glossy screens. Praise the Lord! :)
Dont use paper towels!!! They can scratch your screen. I usually use a very soft cloth like a sock (clean :p) and some water to clean my XGA 15.4 screen

Well, it didnt! :P I'm used to cleaning PSP screens, so I know how easily a surface can be scratched. You have never had a more sensitive screen than the PSP screens! :)
