Hey all, I'm in the market for a 19" LCD, preferrably widescreen. I was wondering if anyone had any (good) experience with a 19 incher. I'm looking to spend no more than $250.

look at this (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=474020) and this (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=472819). The problem with most 19" panels is that they are 6bit. However I got the viewsonic and gave it to my sister, while it may not look as good as an 8bit its still not bad and it was cheaper then my 8bit 20.1" too.

I think most people don't like 19" widescreen panels because they are actually smaller than 19" 4:3 panels in terms of actual screen size. If you really want one though, this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824112002) Sceptre is supposed to have a good 8 bit panel. Personally though, I'm getting an L90D+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824179014). It isn't 8 bit, but it's supposed to be a really nice monitor.

So are 20.1" widescreens. Multiply horizontal pixels by vertical pixels to get the total number of pixels, then multiply the number of pixels by the pixel pitch to get the total screen area:
1600 * 1200 = 1920000 pixels * 0.255 = 489600mm2 for 4:3
1680 * 1050 = 1764000 pixels * 0.258 = 455112mm2 for 16:9
In fact, I've never seen a widescreen that actually had more "screen real-estate" so to speak than its non-widescreen counterpart. I'm too lazy to figure it out, but I'm sure this has to do with a simple rule of geometry.

I don't need an 8bit, I have poor colour vision, and that cheap computer deal you linked to has ended. :eh?:
However, that samsung is a sweet deal. Thanks for your help.

Okay, I've got two candidates now.
The Samsung 940bw (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7894102&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01011&id=1149205183966) from Best Buy for 199.99, or the Acer AL1916W Ab (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009092) for 195.99 from Newegg.
The differences I see are:
D-sub and DVI on the samsung, D-sub only on the Acer
.285 pixel pitch on the samsung, .294 on the acer
contrast ratio 500:1 on the samsung, 700:1 on the acer
I also see there is a whopping 1ms difference in response time, but with all the different ways to measure response time, it is probably useless to compare on that basis. Both mention a three year limited warranty.
Thanks for the help.

Go samsung, you can see it in person at BB, I think samsung is a better manufactuer, and also not having DVI is a huge hit....sorry for that mumbo jumbo at the end, my keyboard is flakin out

I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, I don't want to pay the $12 in sales taxes to WV (I hate this stupid state full of rednecks, I'm not giving them ****) and the BB charges tax even on their online purchases. :bang head
So that brings the actual costs of the two monitors to:
Samsung: $212
Acer: $196

I think he means you can get a 'free preview' ;) One advantage of B&M is it tends to be a easier to exchange for dead pixels given a similar return policy, you just have to walk in and exchange it and not be without a screen for days or pay extra shipping. Tax, meh, shipping is online tax imo.

Yeah, I understood. I'm not all that opposed to waiting a few days for something if it is cheaper that way.

No doubt. I've had the pain in the butt experience of RMAing stuff before.

I agree completely, however, shipping is free with the acer from newegg.

I bought the Samsung today and I've got to say it was a very good choice. No dead pixels. No eye strain. 16:10 widescreen. Some of the best money I've spent on a computer part.
For $212, I am very satisfied so far.
