I presently have a 3 year old Olympic 19" CRT that I use for gaming and have resisted the urge to which to LCD upto now. So from what I've read, I should be looking for at least 19" or high, widescreen LCD, at 12ms or less in responce time.
Can anyone advice me on a good brand/model to select from & why?
Samsung 215tw, it has speakers/component/S-VHS/RCA.

The dell 2007wfp is your best bet IMO. Can return it within 21 days for any reason, if you don't like it, has a dead/stuck pixel (just 1!), backlight, banding...whatever, you can get a full refund or a new unit and they pay shipping. You won't find that customer support from anyone else.
On top of that it's just a solid and IMO nice looking monitor.
you can get it for 350 bucks shipped right now.
I would avoid a 19" widescreen because 1440x900 resolution is small IMO, the 20"'s have 1680x1050, a decent increase if you ask me.

yeah there all good points, but the response rate is only 16ms, which I thought for gaming it would be a bit slow. What do you think?

Samsung 215tw, it has speakers/component/S-VHS/RCA.
And same again the response for Typically is up around the 16ms (Response Time g-g 8ms).
Or am I putting too much emphasise on the response rate?

All of my LCD's have been Dell's mostly due to the reasons ajrettke noted. Dead pixel? Send it back. I think this policy is pretty much unmatched in the industry. Admittedly, I have had very good luck (5 Dell LCD's over time have all been 100% good out of the box) but a poorly placed stuck/dead pixie would drive me nuts.
Add that to the fact that Dell deals can be put together that usually make them the cheapest name brand option, and it is kind of a no brainer. The only other place I would even consider is Costco, but Dell pricing is usually better.
For LCD's I think there are a few major ?'s to ask yourself and points to ponder before settling in on a model:
1.) How good are your eyes? You should assume that your LCD is ran at native resolution - if it is, can your eyes handle it? Are icons then too small? For example 1280x1024 is the native of 4:3 ratio 17" and 19" LCD's. For my tastes the 17" makes things too small, while the 19" is maybe just a tad too big. I know you can adjust DPI and Font sizes in windows but this is not a perfect solution, many programs act funny so it should be avoided if possible. You don't want to be leaning forward all the time just to read your fonts.
2.) I would shy away from 19" widescreens if for no other reason than they are an odd native resolution and almost every game would end up scaled. 19" and below stick with a 4:3 model, if you go wide, get at least a 20" with 1680x1050. Acer recently released some "value line" LCD's with lower than normal native resolutions for the panel size, those might make sense if you have kind of bad eyes.
3.) Consider DVI a minimum requirement. People that say DVI doesn't matter are on crack, from what I have seen. I've worked with maybe 20 different LCD's and analog vs. DVI was night and day - so long as the LCD was running at native. I can see running off native looking about the same, but you shouldn't be running off native so there you go. Put some hard thought into HDCP compliance if you are a video/movie junkie and could see yourself diving into one of the new DVD formats. Gateway has a very nice 20" wide right now with HDMI and also DCDi processing, great if you intend to use it as a TV as well.
4.) Response time numbers vary too much from manufacturer to manufacturer, as do people's levels of sensitivity. I can tell you that I haven't noticed any ghosting on any of my Dell monitors rated at 16ms or lower. I had a 19" at one point that was either 20 or 24ms, and the ghosting bothered me. But I think to some extent this is a person to person thing - like picking up flicker on a CRT tube. Anything under 85Hz on a tube drives me crazy. I would think if you stick with good names and 12ms, you'd be pretty safe.
5.) If you happen to do serious graphics work (your livelihood) or things that make color accuracy critical, then that narrows the field considerably, as color accuracy with LCD's is a problem not all of them handle well. Not an issue for most, but a key one for some.
6.) Finally, it seems silly to mention, but having the monitor be both height and tilt adjustable can be important in a lot of setups to get the correct posture setup. It's a feature you take for granted, but consider it.
I am currently using a Dell 2001FP and 2405FP. No complaints about either. Current Dell 24"s can be had for under $700, and is a killer single display. However if you do mostly productivity on your PC, dual 20"s can be had cheaper and get you more screen space.

So I shouldn't be concern about the Dells 16ms responce rate if I'm primarily going to use this monitor for Gaming?
Get the Dell if you don't want component input, get the Samsung if you want component.

well I'm not really sure about those ms ratings....yeah dell says 16ms, but my LCD is 25ms from dell and I don't see ghosting, but I've seen ghosting on some monitors where the manufacter does say 16ms...go figure.
I know many people on these forums have the 2007 and claim to see no ghosting. Feedback from users of this forum is what I base my decisions on, and the vast majority love thier 2005's and 2007wfp's

What is the significance of component input? (sorry about the lame questions)

I saw the samsung 20 in wide screens were $269 after rebates a week ago in the papers. I was so tempted since I really do like the samsung screens.

Component video is capable of producing signals such as 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. It's so you can use HD sources, like a xbox 360, or a HD-DVR, etc......

I think Dell lists the ns rating for gray to gray, if they measured it like all the others, it would probably list it as 8ns
The 2007FPW is a good LCD for gaming and what not, and despite the listed 16ns, it doesnt ghost and is about the best bang for your buck. Paid $352 shipped for mine not to long ago. Dont let the 16ns scare you.

Yes you're right about some manufacturers quoting g to g.... I found that out today, The Dell g to g is 6ms.... but it's 16ms from white to black (typically).

I think the Dell has the goods, but has anyone heard about the "banding issues" with the 2007WFP? Are they still prevalent?

or

though I do believe they are the exact same monitors...but I like the black look of the one from newegg but the price is much better from dell.lol
Anyone have $720 I could have?lol
I use a 22" Samsung HDTV, and it rocks. Samsung is very good imo, just depends on what you want. However, like others have said, Dell has an awesome return policy.
