Anyway,
I am thinking about/investigating getting a projector and screen instead of a new monitor. I am wondering what experience with this anyone has had? Any suggestions? This would be used for gaming, some photo editting, and probably some video playback/editting.

GAMING with a projector=MEGA NO-NO. sorry to say it, but the only thing i would use a projector for is for watching VHS videos, not even DVD's. spend your money on something super awesome, like dual 21" NEC AS120-BK CRT monitors, those are really good, (i have one) for gaming, high refresh rates, instant reactions, no ghosting, and can go up to 1600x1200 resolution at 85 Hz is where it tops out.

I seriously doubt you'd want to do any work on a projector, least of all something that requires spot-on colour like photo editing.

Also I believe they don't go up to high resolutions (so you'd have only a small screen space) and their bulbs are incredibly expensive.

On the other side of the coin, I own one and enjoy the High Def Quality of my Mitsubishi HC3 that I set up as a home theater projector. Running both High Def cable and PC server on a Dalite 106" 16:9 aspect ratio screen. I say go for it.

A good, well set up projector can look awesome for both gaming and dvds. Even the badly set up projectors we have it school look really good.

If this is something you are really interested in don't forget to calculate the cost of replacement bulbs. Perhaps look into the new LED based mitsubishi.

I own a Sharp XR-10X (1024 X 768)native (1280 X 1024)compressed.
I keepit in 1280 res and is great for games And Movies But not sure for Photo editing.
I burn the lamp of mine after 3 months beacouse i use the projector all day (bad thing).
Also for exesive dust in the vents causing overheat.
Keep your monitor and get the projector plus a Video card whit Dual DVI out and you ill be able to use both to let the lamp last longer.
Tip: chek for dust at least every 2 months.
