We all know that screensavers were meant to protect early CRT's from burn-iin, and having them go into standby was good, because they weren't using the tube, saving power, and to leave them running is apparently dangerous. Anyway, I've got an LCD that I'd like to keep for a while. Now, I just have a few questions:

1)Does leaving it on 24/7 matter? I imagine there's no fire risk, but turning on and off the display daily...
2)Currently, I have a blank screensaver after 10 mins, standby after 1 hour. Now, I thought that since the screensaver was black, the pixels weren't in use, but it looks as if the LCD is still working - black, but illuminated. Are the pixels still being used?

Set the Power control panel to turn the monitor off after 10min. Not just the Screensaver to Blank. That will turn off the backlight on the LCD.

yes, the LCD is on when in black. - otherwise how do you think the LCD shows black on your screen, they dont turn off individual pixels :D

turn it off completly.

Just say I come back to the computer once the backlight is off (with the screensaver atm, this happens several times a day), wouldn't the backlight be damaged by going on and off frequently? Well, not frequently, but a few times a day (e.g after doing "business", watching tv without *horrors* using the computer for a while)...

Mr.Guvernment: I thought a black-lit pixel would be less of a "strain" than a coloured one - until now, I thought black parts of an image turn the respective pixels off...

White is off. As for it switching the BL on and off, it should be ok. They should last around 3-5yrs with normal operation, so you should be ok. I have mine set to go to blank screensaver after 5 min, and off after 10 min. No problems with them after at least a year now.

I noticed my 2001fp had what appeared to be burn-in today and as there is nothing to "burn-in" on a lcd I did a quick google... the equiv. of burn-in on lcd is image persistance, after making a pure white image the same size as my panel and putting it in the "slideshow" screensaver, the afterimages are gone again...now i keep that as my screensaver plus monitor standby.
