Welp, its all Nates fault! :) He AIM'ed me about the woot sale of the 61" DLP Infocus and I spent $2,500 to get an awesome 61" HD DLP widescreen! I even upgraded my digital cable to HD (only 10 HD channels so far) and it is the best Tv I have ever owned!! The HD channels are amazing and DVD is the best by far. My 4yr old daughter Chloe started jumping up and down chanting "big TV" "Big TV" over and over...that as the best part! I love this TV! The 4:3 regular cable channels look grainy and bogus due to being stretched out to the 61" 16:9 ratio...I'm thinking about setting it back to 4:3 on just those channels. This TV is totally loaded...man! It even comes with a wireless keyboard, which I have yet to even use yet! I still haven't gotten all of my cabeling/hookups figured out yet.

But here are a couple shots.....

Oh yeah, my Xbox 360 is faaAAaa-rekin" killer!! wOOOOOOOOOOOOt!

Nice I saw that deal last week, but for $2500 you could have goten Vizio 50" Plasma at your local Costco.

BTW...You are using same stand that I have :p

Yeah, but no tax and $5 shipping ... that's hard to beat. We almost jumped on this a while back but decided to save for a plasma instead as we want to hang it in the bedroom that barely has any room thanks to the massive king sized tempurpedic.

Glad to know someone who actually has this thing now ... always wondered how it really looked. And now I know; it looks beautiful. :D

Yeah, I slobbered ov the Vizo plasmas too. But was warned about the "high" return rate of them.

Well either way Infocus DLP's are up there with big dawgs when it comes to IQ.

Welcome to the new era krag, I have been hooked on HD Programing for awhile now and don't even watch regular channels anymore :p

There just isn't turning back once you see how good it is. Oh and if you have HBO check out Chronicles of Riddick this saturday on 179, it's the best HD movie that I have watched so far.

krag
03-17-06, 12:17 AM
The regular channels look bogus. I dont' have HBO...wished I did now that there is a series on Riddick. Do you have any links that would help a HD noob out?

RedDragonXXX
03-17-06, 12:26 AM
See that is exactly why I'm trying to convince you guys to create HTPC section so we don't need to go to other forums in order to get help. Otherwise AVS Forums is to HT as to OC Forums are to Overclocking.

Vote here (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=4376138#post4376138)

It's not a series, but just a movie. Just like with computers HD stuff have benches as well. Previously Fifth Element was the movie to watch if you had HD Set cause of all the vibrant colors that bring your TV to life. Most of the programing even of HD channels is still upscaled versions of 480i stuff which is mostly seen with movies, but the newer ones like Riddick are true HD material and just look stunning when you watch them.

What other equipment are you using in your HT setup?

Xbox 360
Dennon 100w Reciever 5.1 surround sound
Toshiba 5 DVD changer (slooooow boat anchor)

So far thats it

Make sure to use your Xbox360 to play DVD's cause it uses high end DVD player that can go up against likes of Dennon 3910. I use it as my DVD Player with VGA cable and optical out for sound and I can tell you that's one of the best and I have seen allot of DVD Players.

Also if you want to get best out of your new HDTV then calibration DVD is a must. I'd suggest Digital Video Essentials as it's the one that everyone talks about and they are fairly cheap. You can get it at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005PJ70/qid=1142576231/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-2489780-2627954?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130) for $16.

Im suprised to hear you say that , I find the dvd playback on my 360 lackluster compared to my Sony NS725P DVD player (which isnt even high end) , I just ordered a Panasonic S97 dvd player which upconverts to (selectable) 720p or 1080i via HDMI using Faroudja DCDi and is rated very highly for its picture quality and all other aspects of dvd playback ,Im sure something like this would be much better choice for a large screen DLP.

Those have a high return rate and arent nearly as good of quality. Plus this is 12" larger :santa: and the same depth.

Plasma is old school - DLP & LCD are in :)

Congrats on the purchase Krag!

And whats the closest to a LCD for much less? InFocus DLP 7 inches deep. Much larger size available.

S97 is probably the best bang for the buck DVD Player and delivers outstanding picture quality, but it's still upscaling from 480i. I highly recommend this DVD Player to anyone that's in the budget cause it's just outstanding. Oppo also makes mean DVD Players for the price range, but Dennon is the king and new Pioneer Elites also deliver outstanding results but will cost you well over 1K to get one.

Check out this (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=122) site as it compares all top of the line Players against each other. S97 is in there as well :p

Xbox360 uses latest generation DVD Player which can go against some of the best in the market, but however if you really want to see it shine you need to use VGA cable which produces true 1:1 direct pixel mapped image and component does not.

Ah Thanks for the info, I have the 360 VGA cable but haven't tried DVD playback with it yet, I'll have to give it a go on my FW900 monitor.

Better than plasma because plasma looks real lousy at non native res.
I'm waiting for this to get closer to $2k or at least half of what they want now.
Very nice 1080p capable HDTV for future proofing.

Native res for SED's will be 1080p, but it will scale down to 1080i and 720p due to the lack of 1080p material.

Actually from what I've seen the Sony SXRDs have a beautiful picture and are currently #1 on CNETS Top 10 (http://reviews.cnet.com/Televisions/4521-6531_7-5021476-1.html) HDTVs list.

Im looking forward to SED as well but early adopters will be paying a high premium and might have to deal with the usual new technology issues & bugs.

Well this infocus is half the price, and very comparable to it, possibly even more features with this InFocus DLP. Most of my experiences with Sony products were bad, why pay more for something thats nearly the same as this one, and maybe even better in some areas?

You mentioned DLP... :(

DLP is a disqualifier for me as those rainbow artifacts drive me nuts.

Most people don't see them but both the wife and I can pick out the DLPs from the LCDs across the room long before we get close enough to read the info cards.

It's not a joke. A small percentage of people have eyes that are sensitive to these rainbow effects from the DLP prism system. They suggest that everyone in a household view a screen before buying it to be sure that it won't be a problem.

The new DLP's with LED's will eliminate the rainbow affect because the color wheel is no longer used. Life of the LED goes to 20,000 plus hours as well
