View Full Version : Please help me find a 19" LCD
I've just decided that I will complete my most recent upgrade with a shiny new LCD to replace my CRT behemoth that is taking up a huge chunk of my limited desk space.
I have $500 to spend on it (absolutely no more, and must include tax & shipping as I live in Ca). I want it to be a 19" display, and it must have UNDER 8ms response time, preferably 2-4, although up to 6ms might be acceptable depending on the reviews. Now for the hard part, I want it to display it's native resolution @ 85Hz.
Yes, this monitor will be used for gaming (BF2,Quake4,Doom3,and some RPGs) mostly, with internet, e-mail, and posibly minor video editing in the future as my daughters grow.
Is there any sort of monitor that will fit my requests? Please help me out, now that I've decided to get this I really want to hurry so I can complete my new setup. Thanks for your help!
Try these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Description=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&OEMMark=-1&Manufactory=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=1056%3A9098&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=1067%3A18958&PropertyCodeValue=1067%3A18686&PropertyCodeValue=1067%3A16674&PropertyCodeValue=1067%3A16682&PropertyCodeValue=1067%3A17006&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&Submit=Property&SubCategory=20)
All 19", 2-6ms, etc. Btw, I'm 92% sure that any LCD can "run" at 85Hz, seeing as how LCDs don't have refresh rates. The setting in Windows is simply there for LCDs because LCDs weren't going mainstream when MS was developing it.
I vote for the NEC 90GX2 LCD. Its been a great gaming LCD

The only issue that I see with "having to have an LCD with at least 8ms or slower" response time, is that you are using a panel that is inferior in colour reproduction. That may or may not be important to you. They mostly use 6bit panels + dithering to claim their 16.2 million colours. Other panels that have slower response time ratings have 16.7 million true colours, not dithered. There are a few good panels that will give you 8ms, with 16.7million colours.
Also of note, is that not all measurements are created equally. 8ms might be measured as typical, but 2ms is the fastest that they have gotten with a black to white, so while they are not lying, they are not telling you the whole truth or what reality will give you when you use your monitor.
Myself, I like the Viewsonic VP930B. Not the ultimate gaming LCD but a fine balance.

Even at 60 hz, they probably look fine, AFAIK. LCDs don't require high refresh frequencies like CRTs to have a good picture!
60 hz with a CRT looks ugly, it will flicker and likely be wavy.
CRTs require around 100 hz for the best picture!
With LCDs, they should look fine even at 60 hz, because LCDs, unlike CRT don't have a beam that's required to move across the screen. Also, LCDs use less watts than CRTs, just like fluorescent lights vs. incandescent lights!
