I am finally taking the plunge. I have read most of the post of guys getting LCD's and the selection is intimidating. The task is daunting but I want to make the switch now. I will buy a 19 to 21 inch, must have DVI input and I want one that will not lag in games. I play the latest, Doom3, Quake4, FEAR, FarCry etc. Not much of a movie watcher on PC so that is not an issue.
Viewsonic VX922, NEC 90GX2, are two I have looked hard at. Anyone here have one? Also Gateway FPD2185W. I want to make a wise choice the first time. I will spend up to 500.00.
Thanks in advance for any input.
if i had $500 to spend on a monitor, i would get this one (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=20053YR&category_id=4009). there's alot of people on the fourms that have one of these. i'm sure someone can comment on it for ya.

yeah, i definitely picking one up for my birthday. Wait for sales though or when they come out with their insane coupons. I'm sure the price will drop after awhile since the 30 inch one is coming out. THATS a beast.

Dont forget about the Gateway 21' widescreen LCD

Circuit City has a sale going on if you hurry, you save $72.00 so its $527.99
Its the 2005 FPW from Dell. Its a pretty good monitor. I've only had mine for a few months so I have no real complaints. No dead pixels, minimum back light bleeding. Buy it when its on sale. I got mine for $460 and I know its been lower than that.

i tend to prefer Viewsonics' VPxxx line....great panels, great support, etc. I do have a 2405FPW that rocks.

I will put in another vote for the Dell 2005fpw. I have 2 running on my main rig. They are very nice monitors, and if you wait it out, you can get a great price on them. I bought mine about 8 months apart, the first one for $384, and the second one for $324.

Do any of you guys use one of the Dell or Gateway 21" for games? Do you have any lag with it. Im not sure what the lowest MS response time is that I should settle for. Mabe that is the better question to be asking since it will be used a lot in high end games.
Thanks for any helpful advice.

I don't have any ghosting in BF2, AOE3, C&C Generals, WC3, etc. Can't say with other games like FEAR, Far Cry, Doom3, or Q4, since I don't own them. The minimum people say, is 12ms for little to no ghosting. Some people with excelent eyes can see this ghosting even on some of the faster LCDs. With Dell, you have like a 30Day satisfaction Gurantee, or your money back. Try it out, if you dont like it, send it back.

The gateway has a 8ms response time so I dont notice ghosting. Ive played games on 25ms and 16ms LCD's in the past and this new gateway is dang good at playing games. I mainly play NFS: Most Wanted and BF2/special forces right now and I think its incredable.
You do need to hit up http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/ though if you get a widescreen LCD so you can play your games at 1680x1050
Yet another vote for Dell 2005 FPW. I have one, I play games on it all the time (FEAR, CS:S, BF2. WoW) and there is not ghosting visable at all. I would recomend you get one. = )
Anyone notice this little gem?

I'm playing the same games as you and the Dell 2001fp handles them nicely.

Im looking for a good LCD as well as my CRT is starting to go in and out brightness wise, and has a nice yellow overlay.
Right now its betweenthe Gateway and the Dell.
this one (http://www.neovo-usa.com/products/F-419.htm) can be had for less then 275. I game alot on it and i love it. NFSMW, AOE3 heck even Quake 4 and similar don't suffer anything. 19" 12ms
I have no idea why people hunt for 4 and 8ms LCDs that cost twice the neovo. I really cannot see the difference, but my wallet sure can.

I've heard nothing but good stuff from the dell lcds. my friend got one of those 199$ AR lcds from tiger and I would prefer my crt over that..

Well I got home today and wet to turn the ol' 19" on and wouldnt you know it, it didnt go on. She's dead Jim. (stolen :P) But yea now I have to use this equally old 15". Made me turn my resolution down something fierce. I really need to get a new moniter now but I am having trouble justifying the money for a good one...looks like i will have to take the plunge. Sigh....bye bye A Moment of Silence :bang head

Well most people on these forums will recommend the Dell since they have one. The Gateway is new and I think I might be the only one here who actually has it.
The main reason I bought it was because it supports HDTV formats and has component inputs for my xbox and ps2. Also the response time is a lil faster than the Dell and the contrast ratio is 1000:1!!! I guess another plus is that it has DCDi...aperently Windows Vista will be using this feature...I don't really know that much about DCDi.
Anywho I would have to say the Gateway is the better monitor, the question is are you willing to spend the money on one?Circuit City had a nice online deal for the Gateway $527.99 but I'm not sure if its still going on.

I am close to getting this. Now all I am looking at is how my card can do with this. Anymore input is nice and appreciated. And I am getting it from BB cause I am getting one tonight.
Dual DVI Support
Able to drive the industry's largest and highest resolution flat-panel displays including 1900x1200 resolution and the new Apple 30" cinema display. (Support for Apple 30” cinema display available on the GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB only.)
Does this mean I will be able to use this moniter to the resolution it deserves? Card in my sig, the 6600.

Samsung and Viewsonic Id say are too very good brands. I have a 20.1" Viewsonic in my room and love it, and my father has a Samsung 930B which I love aswell, cant go wrong. I think Viewsonic is alittle better quality wise but however has dead pixel problems. I have one dead pixel on mine, but I can live with it. As long as the LCD has 16ms response time or less it is good for gaming.

I have it set at 1680x1050 res, which is the recommended size Im sure the 6600 can disply that res.
EDIT: If you buy this Gateway buy a DVI CABLE!!!! lol
I bought this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6733154&type=product&id=1087340589488

its just the quality of the cable...I had no problem spending $70 on a high quality DVI cable but a default brand DVI cable should do just fine...anyone else have input on this please post :)

I'm a total noob so I would like to know what's the difference between DVI and VGA? What does the cable quality impact? Or how much as well. And again to make sure my card can handle it fine. ( I always hear people saying things about your card better be able to support blah blah blah by blah blah blah)
Thanks.
(and sorry if this is a bit of a threadjack, but the original poster had basically the exact same question as me, and Im guessing hed like to know these things as well)

lol, we arnt threadjacking...we just are putting out info.
Anywho your video card will be able to display 1680x1050 in windows but in games your frames per second will probably deminish so you'll have to lower the res. in games.
As for the cable its the size of the cable that really matters, gauge. The thicker the cable the more shielding it has against interference. But to be honest I cant really tell you all the pro's about these DVI cables...hopefully someone here on the forums works at radio shack or something and can explain, lol.
Grrr....my Samsung 204t came with a DVI cable...VGA too! But it does have one stuck pixel right in the middle of the screen...drives me nuts! NUTS!
Maybe I'll wander over to best buy tomorrow and check that Gateway out. Just don't wanna lose my 1200 vert. It's been SOOO handy when viewing forums. :bang head

lol, I feel your pain man. When I got my Gateway LCD I had to wait almost an entire week before my Shuttle SN25P and other hardware came from newegg...it was Christmas time
I had it out on my desk here and everytime I saw it I died a lil inside because I couldnt use it, lol.
Jod...you can have 1680 vert, lol.
Haha, good point. I'll probably check it out anyway. It's got som key advantages over the Samsung 204t currently residing on my desktop.
204t vs FPD2185W
Pixel pitch.255 vs.270
Screen size: 20.1 vs 21
Contrast ratio: 700:1 vs 1000:1
Viewing angle: (H/V) 178/170 vs 178/178
Response time: 16ms vs 8ms
Samsung 1, Gateway 5
Resolution:
1600x1200 @ 60 vs Anti-Glare coating and 1680x1050 @ 75hz
Now this may sound odd, but I had a Samsung 712n (1280x1024 @ 60) that looked MUCH better @ 75hz. I tried setting the 204t to 75 in analog, but it looked worse. So, I wonder if the Gateway would look better?

I read that the 2001fp has some serious scanline issues, can anyone confirm or deny or explain this ?
----------------------------
Pros: Great price Great colors Fast response time
Cons: Poor picture quality Horizontal lines Grainyness screendoor effect
Full review
I know this isn't only my problem with this display. However, only a few people seem to be able to notice the poor picture quality that this monitor offers. There are glaring horizontal lines that show up on this display that I just couldn't get past. I shipped mine back within my 30 days that Dell provides. Here are a few examples of what others have claimed:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=29230
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=28896
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=28865
That about covers why I didn't like this monitor. As stated in the first review above, all monitors that use this display have the same issue. Some people just don't see it because everyone sees things differently.
iv used and loved my dell 2001fp for 2 years now, iv never seen any grainy line or anything described in those threads...neither has any of the other folks that use my pc a lot either...maybe dell changed their panel in newer revisions?

Wouldn't having a widescreen be funky for gaming? Would the image be stretched out?

If the game doesnt support the widescreen res. then go here
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/
There you can click on the game list and find the game you want to play and find a lil tutorial on how to play that game at a widescreen res.
